Re: physical MIDI cable specs

Another interesting tidbit about the 5-pin DIN connectors used for MIDI: they are the same connectors that the original IBM PC and PC/AT used for the keyboard. Many "clone" PCs even into the mid 90s used this same "AT" keyboard connector. Why is this relevant? Well, one time years ago I needed a lon...

Re: Vibrating Pro One

Transformers can vibrate at the mains frequency (50 or 60 Hertz depending on what country you're in). And on most Pro-Ones the transformer is bolted to the chassis. As a result, if the transformer vibrates, the chassis can pick up the vibrations. You could try clamping the transformer plates in a vi...

Why not just replace the faulty slider? There are places on eBay that have parts for these old synths.

Re: "Wonderful Christmas Time" by Wings Synth?

I'm pretty sure it was the Prophet 5 doing the resonant filter bits and the CS80 doing the string pad. Someone said it wasn't a delay used but an inverted-saw LFO modulating the filter. I don't think so. It was a delay. It was gated so that the delayed notes would stop when a new chord was struck. J...

Re: Roland JX8P advise

Can the filter "self resonate" and what are the waveforms for this synth on the DCO's? The filter has resonance but it doesn't self-oscillate. The DCOs have, IIRC, sawtooth, square, and a narrow pulse. No variable pulse width or PWM. Noise is available as well. Cross modulation (sounds more l...

Re: Fixed a Yamaha DX-7

Nice find, and nice job fixing 'er up! Down the road you can always get some replacement keys, slider caps, etc. on eBay and make it perfect.

Looks like you got a cartridge with it too?

Lovely classic 80s synthdom. I love it.

Re: Notes on Keyboard out of tune?

There is a "scale tune" function on the JV-90 that lets you tune/detune individual notes. It's under the menu you get when you press the Tune button. Pages 38-40 of the manual mentions this. You can turn scale tuning off for the entire synth so you don't have to reset the tuning of each individual n...

Re: Can anyone identify that synth?

The keyboard on top is an Alesis A6 Andromeda.

Not 100% sure what the other synths are, they look a bit like a V-Synth and a Motif of some sort.

To me it has a metallic sound to it, so it could be a percussive sound that's gated and run through a fast delay with the feedback cranked. Hand clap could work.

Re: Roland D-50 notes only sound on release

The D-50 has everything on a single board (other than the control panel and display), there is no separate "keyscan" board. Try the MIDI thing, if it plays ok, then it's something to do with the keyboard or the circuits that scan it. My first hunch is a connector between the keyboard and the motherb...

The Tetra circuit board says "Phour" on it. Seems like the code names for DSI projects are more interesting than the real names.

I wonder what witticisms reside on the Prophet '08 or Poly Evolver boards.

Re: Condenser mic

Condenser mics NEED power to function. Some require phantom power from the plug, while others run off a battery. Check the specs on the mic you're looking at. If your sound card doesn't have phantom power, maybe you have a mixer or audio interface that does, or there's probably a phantom power conve...

Re: What do I need? MG-1 feature needed to be added to a Pro

Hello Ladies, I have a dilemma. I have an Moog MG-1 that I just sold, but I loved the "auto contour" and filter feature (the filter slider that is blue and the second slider from the left. I am new to synths so sorry for being dumb but I think the feature was an arpeggiator that had some cool rando...

Re: question about DX7 cartridges

To the left of the display, there are "Memory Select" buttons, one for cartridge and one for internal. Hit "Cartridge" and then you can access the 32 patches in the cartridge just like you would with the internal memory (access and store). There's separate "Protect" buttons for internal and cartridg...

Re: What was the Deepest Synth you ever bought?

All my synths are pretty "deep"... A6, D-550, TX802... and the Motif XS. ;)

I guess I don't tend to bother with simpler synths... at least in my current setup.
