Re: Why are Euroracks called "Euroracks?"

In 1996 Dieter Doepfer set a rack standard based on rack enclosures that were commonly available secondhand in Europe. Other manufacturers configured their modules to conform to Doepfer's Eurorack standard and an industry was born.

Re: Slight buyer's remorse on my Jupiter 6...

Regarding mixing sections. it is interesting to note the compromises that apparently had to be made due to the limits in processing power. It seems that having a full-service mixing section forced compromises in other areas. On the Prophet 5 there is a continuously variable knob for each oscillator ...

Re: Slight buyer's remorse on my Jupiter 6...

Yes, those five voices on the Prophet can be limiting. On my Prophet I get dropped notes if I don't play in a very precise detached manner. This happens even when I play less than five notes. According to the tech that restored it this is due to the limits of processing power available at the time a...

Re: Slight buyer's remorse on my Jupiter 6...

The Jupiter 6 is my favorite of the polySynths I have. It has pretty much every function you expect in an analog Synth and in some ways goes beyond many other Polys including the Jupiter 8. I can almost always get whatever I want from this Synth. I could rave about the JP6 all day but there are a co...

Re: Synths and You (the collection of opinions)

1) The synth that made you want to play music: I was already playing when Synths became widely available. 2) Your first synth: ARP Odyssey white face purchased new in 1974. 3) The synth that has surprised you most: ARP Odyssey. I was amazed at everything it could do and nothing I've had since has in...

Re: Choosing between the MS-20 mini and KARP Odyssey *module

Though not a resonant HP filter the Odyssey does have a HP filter following the LP filter which is a feature Roland adopted on some of their Synths. This HP filter acts somewhat like an EQ which can roll off low end and thin the overall sound so it sits well in a mix. I prefer the Odyssey's Ring Mod...

Re: Multivox synths

I went to various southern California music stores around 1980 looking for a particular Multivox keyboard to try out and nobody carried the brand. After I told a salesman at one store that I couldn't find them anywhere he said that should tell me something about the product. He said Multivox was a c...

Re: Marxophone samples?

An example of a Marxophone on a well-known recording can be heard on "Alabama Song" by The Doors. Real Marxophones show up on eBay quite often.

Re: Keyboard with decent Farfisa organ sound

Most analog Synths don't have enough oscillators to do a truly accurate Farfisa sound. You can get something Farfisa-like so it all depends on how close you need to get. FM Synths are somewhat better because you can get the !6, 8, 4, and 2 2/3 footages found on the Compact Deluxe and Compact Duo. FM...

Re: What was the most expensive Synth you ever bought?

My most expensive Synth is now the Prophet 5 rev. 2. Initially purchased not working for $1500. Restoration was just under $2500. Total cost of about $4000.

Re: Which synth was your first love or lighted your G.A.S. ?

It was a brand new white-face ARP Odyssey. Back then it was pretty much a MiniMoog or an Odyssey. At first I wanted a MiniMoog but the salesman showed me a bunch of things the Odyssey could do that the Moog couldn't. He didn't take into account the awesome sound of the Moog but I went with the Odyss...
