Re: Any Eurorack Modules like a Yamaha CS ?

After I stopped cackling like a madman at this, :laugh3: I wanted to point out that this indeed would be an advantage if the design was faithful, because afaik, all of the CS monosynths lack a voltage control input for filter cutoff. It would be a fairly basic mod, though.

Re: Oberheim OB-6 Dave Smith

I like to think of it like the new version of the DeLorean DMC-12 with similar look but a new engine. Then you somehow end up with a bunch of bozos shouting "Hey, this isn't a time machine?!?", because we live in the age of information, where being ignorant is a choice. Old look, new sound, better q...

Re: Roland Jupiter 8

I would venture it's worth it if you play one and decide not only do you love it, but nothing else can replace it, given how few of them there are to go around. And can afford it, of course. As usual, best to shop around and make an informed decision. I listen to my old recordings of the JP8 I owned...

Re: Oberheim OB-6 Dave Smith

Then let's presume there is no dilemma and give the new breed an opportunity to stand on their own and prove their worth through the test of time, just as vintage already has had ample opportunity to do so. I just wish I could afford something like this! Really for myself just need to not see polysy...

Re: Oberheim OB-6 Dave Smith

Snagged these from Gearslutz, comparing the P6 and OB6 voice boards: http://108.163.194.218/~murmurbe/images/gear/OB6voice1.jpg http://108.163.194.218/~murmurbe/images/gear/OB6voice2.jpg Seems most of the chips on the circuitry are for control voltages from the interface. Let the SMT vs. thru-hole d...

Re: Roland Jupiter 8

I figured x amount per voice, plus the extra cost for keyboard, interface, processing & storage, body/case, a heavily loaded(and irreplaceable) power supply and hopefully a decent midi retrofit already installed should at most be $400 per voice and $1200 for the rest, converted to pounds would be £3...

Re: Do different oscillators have their "own" sound ?

My argument was that the main personality of a synth doesn't really come from the oscillators, which probably are quite sound-generic and not very "special" sonically, but from the circuitry that goes after the oscillators. Since the oscillators are the tone source, they are indeed more of a "raw-m...

Re: Do different oscillators have their "own" sound ?

As a more visual example, the rectangle waveform in the MFB Kraftzwerg, which apparently is the same as his previous Synth II product, is practically a weaker amplitude sawtooth waveform, within a synchronized dc offset on each side, that inverts after the duty cycle completes. Here's a screenshot o...

Re: Oberheim OB-6 Dave Smith

This is basically a Prophet 6 rejiggered into an Oberheim. What I'm wondering is, aside from the front panel controls, is this internally just a switchout of voice cards in a socketed modular fashion? That could open up some great possibilities. As excited as I was at the news of the Prophet 6, I h...

Re: Yamaha CS15 vs Korg Mono/Poly

Before the thread moves too far into alternate suggestions, I just wanted to point out that although the CS monos have better service records than the Korgs, once something fails it is going to be very expensive to find replacement parts, if you can find them at all. My CS-15 has two noisy VCA's tha...

Re: Recommendations after Virus Ti

Aside from price and the multitimbral aspects, first thing I think of is the Prophet 6. I kept hearing similarities between it and the Virus when I got a chance to play one, especially for the more subtly distorted sounds.

Re: Martin Lueders PG8X (JX8P soft synth)

I have always been impressed with PG8X, and it just keeps getting better. Being a former JX8P owner, I also stand by its authenticity as being outstanding, up until you get into the really high resonance, where it just sounds more harsh and more stable than a real one. No aisling in the oscillators,...

Re: Roland Boutique

I never understood what all the hype of the JP8 arpeggiator was all about. It can't properly sync to Din/Sync and when you play legato chord changes, the timing gets messed up about half the time. I guess it's that whole "key follow" aspect it does instead of a traditional arpeggio. After listening ...

Re: Prophet-6 Module Announced!

I'm kinda excited about this. 13 lbs, and about the width and length of 2 sheets of paper. The Prophet 6 sound is growing on me, unlike previous DSI endeavors. Something about the harmonics in the oscillators all playing together is hypnotizing. I played the keyboard version recently: Not so much oo...

Re: Roland Boutique

After listening carefully to the JP 08 pads in the above video and comparing to a few I compiled from my old JP8 recordings, http://108.163.194.218/~murmurbe/music/demos/JP8padclips.mp3 I can tell right away that the tone appears similar, but the behavior of how the oscillators interact is not. Take...
