I've got about the same number of instruments you do, and I find my analog mixer extremely useful. Everything goes through it, including the output of my sound card, and the output of my Wii... It goes out to the monitors. When sketching music, it's very useful. The instruments are always plugged in...

any Live users btw? Seems everyone I've seen that uses live does so only for, well, live performance. I've tried it for writing and didn't find it matched my style, maybe if I tried using it just in the DAW mode and not in the performance (or whatever it's called, the 'grid') mode. If you want quality delay that'll give you something that software won't, try the MXR Carbon Copy, it's really great.

What I do on the master is compression -> eq -> compression. I find it brings up the volume with enough control over the type of sound you want and without destroying the mix.
