Re: Mixing down at the right level....

My instinct would say to increase the drum level a bit - lots of transients in the drums (even with the tape) should keep the listener's ear occupied without being worried by noise. Having said that, is noise really that much of a problem? Lots of older records have a fair amount of noise on them, b...

Re: Spend my inheritance (well... some of it...)

I probably wouldn't go for a Model D. Though I'm sure it's an amazing-sounding synth, I would actually appreciate MIDI and patch memory. I have been thinking, though... I've seen Voyagers go on CL and eBay for @ $2000, and P08s for @ $1500. Since I'd probably be selling a couple of polysynths after...

Re: tube amps

To the OP, there aren't any particular amps to recommend, but I'd suggest a bass amp for the extended low frequency response, and nothing smaller than a 12" cone. unless it's a cab with 4 10's.... or 24 5" drivers... http://www.philjonespuresound.com/PJWeb ... 8T16B.aspx It is the most amazing bass...

Re: tube amps

Is there any other advantage to hand wired amps, besides easier maintenance and reliability? Actually there is, but it's not as relevant as it once was: PCBs can become slightly loose and become microphonic (I'm sure you know what this is). Amps made by hand without PCBs don't risk this, though obv...

Re: DI's for Synths

Something like an Avalon preamp will contain a compressor No compressor in an Avalon preamp, although they do make some channel strips that put a pre, EQ and comp all in one box. From what you've been posting it seems like you're using the term preamp to describe both preamps and channel strips. Yu...

Re: Question on reverb and Moog MP-201 or CP-251?

Sounds like maybe what you should do is one of two things: 1) either set the reverb to 100% wet, so that you don't get the initial impulse, or 2) record the dry sound, reverse it in your sequencer/run the tape backwards, then pass it out to a reverb and re-record. You then run the latter recording i...

Re: DI's for Synths

and High cut switch eliminates noise No it doesn't eliminate noise, it just puts a roll off in the bottom end, reducing the lower frequencies. In certain applications, such as a vocal mic, these low frequencies are noise. But not with synths, generally, unless you want to thin out the tone. I didn'...

Re: DI's for Synths

Yeah, sorry for getting shitty before (probably best just to ignore all above posts by me, bad day today). As it happens the weather was absolutely horrible today with a massive downpour just as I had to go out. I obviously mistook your tone in the post and wholeheartedly apologise for getting piss...

Re: DI's for Synths

I'm sorry did I say it is all you need to make your synths sound good? I know probably about as much as you when it comes to producing a record from start to finish. All I meant was that a good DI goes a long way towards a professionally sounding recording. This is "my" opinion and is shared by man...

Re: a few questions about Auralex and its ilk...

Personally, I think Auralex is way overpriced. It is just foam. Although it is pretty and well marketed. It is also fire-retardant. Please don't go putting highly inflammatory materials on your wall! Yeah, bass traps are more essential in little rooms as you can't just deal with them by putting thi...

Re: a few questions about Auralex and its ilk...

FWIW, Sound on Sound refurbish people's home studios using Auralex - they get it for free, but I don't think they'd use it at all if it didn't do any good. People are always pretty complementary about it. The article series is called Studio SOS. :)

Space6oy, sorry I haven't given a detailed reply - I totally forgot about having a thorough look at your stuff! I'm pretty busy with interviews for the next couple of weeks so it'll have to wait, but best of luck. Write things down and organise them in your head before you actually put anything toge...

Re: Live 8 is announced

I've had a quick look at the NAMM '09 thread (can you excuse me for not wanting to read through 6 pages of how Korg/Yamaha/Roland haven't released a latter-day supersynth that can make any sound imaginable and more, and 'damn the boutique stuff is just so expensive, why can't they make it for mere m...
