A self-circuit bending Ensoniq ESQ-1?

My Ensoniq ESQ-1 started demonstrating some quirks recently that--while expected becuase of the machines age--make me second guess my plans to repair the power-supply and replace the faulty chip on the main board (I have an early serial number, OS. 2.0) The reason for my heistation is that I have fa...

Re: A Synth nerds existential crisis.

Those of you telling me to get vintage gear missed my point for getting the micron: Since I am taking it to college it is to my advantage that I am not going to fall in love with it. The micron is something to tinker with so I can leave my ESQ and DX at home. I am an Early Modern Slavic Lit/Russian ...

Re: A Synth nerds existential crisis.

Looked at the microkorg and I am very underwhelmed. So here is what I am doing. I realized that I have an insatiable desire for a "new toy" that should be satisfied as economically as possible on a college student's budget. I also am going to streamline my studio while keeping up with the 80s theme....

Re: A Synth nerds existential crisis.

hmm, the Micron looks nice... I wonder if it will complement the 80s vintage thing I have going on rather than overshadow it. Thoughts?

Re: A Synth nerds existential crisis.

my feelings on DCO's should be well conveyed in my lineup. I prefer them. I would like to come across a cheap akai. They seem so rare though! The AX- 80 is mid 80s, has an arpeggiator and DCOs (not sure if the circuits themselves are digital or digitally controlled analogue oscillators) so it fits i...

Re: A Synth nerds existential crisis.

I wonder if an Akai AX-60 or 80 would be absolutely impossible to find? perhaps any suggestions for other boards that are fully analogue but still 80's?

this thread is so helpful. thanks guys.

Re: A Synth nerds existential crisis.

I suppose the biggest snag in my lineup is the lack of arpeggiator, which is why I looked at the DW-8000 and Microkorg to begin with. I kind of want something small, along the lines of a Multimoog or Micromoog in size (hence looking at the microkorg), which i suppose is a minus for the dw-8000. Any ...

A Synth nerds existential crisis.

In need of some advice my fellow synth junkies. My lineup currently consitsts of two Ensoniq boards (ESQ-1 and Mirage) the Casio CZ-101, and a Yamaha DX7. I am about to purchase either a Korg DW-8000 for around 200 (plus shipping) OR a Microkorg for slightly more. My Question: Given that I already h...

Is the Sequencer on my ESQ-1 Dead?

I am having some issues with the sequencer on my favorite ensoniq board: the esq-1. For some reason, it refuses to add data to any of my sequences. I have the memory expansion card, and I recently cleared the memory completely, so that cant be the issue. I can get all of the pages to come up, but wh...

Re: what are your favorite digital synths?

The ESQ-1 has analoge filters so I dont know if it can be considered *purely* digital. But it is certianly my favorite sysnth with DCO's. As far as PURE digital synths go, probably the CZ-101 (or any synth in that series except the 230s). Also love the Korg M1, just wish those filters could resonate...

Re: Vintage synth prices to drop dramatically in downturn ?

I would say that, like in all economics, it depends on the specific situation. Fairlight CMI's probably aren't going to get any cheaper. What you WILL see are larger quantities of vintage synths available because of people selling them out of necessity. Last week, I bought a DX7 II in perfect condit...
