Your choices are hardware or software. For 300, assuming you already have a computer, you could get a fantastic synth, drum machine and enough FX to make your mix pop. Surely the perfect instrument is one which makes you want to play it, which inspires, which you have fun using. If that's a virtual emulation, a MicroKorg or a Minimoog, so be it.
