Volume of Vocals in a mix

When mixing vocals, talking about just track volume balancing, is it common practice to have the vocals tracks sit a few dBs higher than the other tracks? When I listen carefully to a lot of my favorite songs (or just songs in general) this seems to be the case from what my ears tell me. I have not ...

Balancing track levels in headphones

Hey guys, I have a newbie question and I'm looking for answers only from people who know what they are talking about. I know it is widely said to never mix in headphones, which I agree with. However, what if you are just balancing track levels? Have any of you ever done this, making sure that all tr...

Re: Yamaha SY-77 vs Roland D-50

The Motif series probably won't be impressive enough for electronic music lovers and such, so I can see where you stand.

Anyway, I would love to hear some of your work in which the SY99 was used.

Re: Yamaha SY-77 vs Roland D-50

The best way I know of getting the "gear lust" off my chest is by purchasing the synths needed. My SY77 and SY99 are still my main synths and continue to produce almost all of the sounds/timbres I need. Clyde You're right 100%. The thing in this case though, I don't "need" either of those synths, a...

Newfound SY-77 & D-50 lust

I bumped this 3 yr old thread (which I started btw) because I have a newfound lust for both of these machines. I owned the rack versions of both of these synths before but I sold them not long after. I found that my Motif Rack was my main "go to" machine for bread & butter sounds. A few classic DX s...

Re: yamaha motif es vs korg m50

To me the Motif series (I did use to own an original Motif Rack before though) makes more sense as a ROMpler. They don't come with a wide variety of different sounds as others, but their material are of higher quality. The way I see it, why have several sucky versions of one instrument when you can ...

Re: low cost DAW for mainly recording HW w/some vst use too

I've been using Acoustica Mixcraft since I started producing 6 yrs ago. They're latest is Mixcraft 5 and since this version I just never saw the reason to use anything else. It is very low cost compared to other DAWs and still has mostly all the professional features one needs while keeping a very e...

PLG-150 boards layered with host board?

Hi, Just a simple question.. This was discussed briefly as a non-main topic in the forum maybe two years or so ago but I cannot find it via the search. I don't think there was a straight answer anyway. I just wanted to know if the DX7 sounds via the PLG-150 DX board can be layered with the sounds of...

Re: Random Volume in FM8 DX patches

I found that the volume lowers especially when playing notes that are "glued" together somewhat, and when the sustain of the sound is done ringing out, the volume goes back to normal. This is not the only time the volume of a patch will randomly fluctuate however. Sometimes I can just select a patch...

Re: Random Volume in FM8 DX patches

Who knows. I don't know of anyone personally who have played dx patches on the fm8 and experienced this. I cannot say it is a problem or a bug because I am not sure if this happens on the original dx synth which the patches come from. Maybe it's true what I've heard that the FM8 isn't accurate in tr...

Random Volume in FM8 DX patches

I notice that when playing various DX patches (doesn't matter which DX, but I especially notice it with DX7 patches) the volume of the patch sometimes varies in that it may sound normal and full, then it may randomly lower and sound thinner. Sometimes the volume will get real loud on it's on. I neve...

yamaha motif es vs korg m50

As always with synths vs other synths, it all depends on how it's used, but which between the two mentioned synths has better overall sounds, like more authentic realism in acoustic instruments, better synths, pads, more versatility in the range of sounds offered, etc.

Re: Dub Production

"And for god's sake, if you're not from Jamaica, don't fake the accent." Thanks for pointing that out tallowwaters. I hate when people do that s**t. It just sounds wrong on so many levels. Me being jamaican (though not born there), can point out a fake instantly and it's annoying. lol Hey smoothcrim...
