Re: Desktop vs full keyboard synths

Desktop: more space, but more faff Keyboard: less faff, but less space It's a tricky one. There's that middle ground too, like a KARP Odyssey mini key or an Arturia Minibrute. It's basically your controller keyboard and a handy synth to pack with your laptop on holiday. (Yes, i have a very tolerant ...

Re: First Analogue Synth advice/opinions needed!

My advice would be to forget the drum machine, at least for now, and use Ableton's drum sampler. It's plenty good enough, and makes sidechaining the kick easy. Do you want a mono or poly? Are you going to cover chords/harmony duties with a softsynth? Mono-wise, the Korg MS-20, Odyssey or Minibrute a...

60th. Jings. And he's still bloody good.

Here in my car
I feel oldest of all
I childlock the back doors
With kids the only way to drive
In cars

Here in my car
My daughter will plead
To put on Little Mix
It keeps me grumpy for days

Re: Future sequencer replacement - MMT8 to Command Station??

Ha, I had an MMT-8 - great fun! But, yeah. 1987. Can't help you with the XL7 unfortunately. Suggestions that came to my mind: - Akai? MPC 1000 or similar + JJ OS is very capable. More features than the MMT-8, and a sampler too. I have one of these, and you can turn parts off and on in real time. - A...

Re: £1000 First Synth

A second-hand Novation KS4/KS5/KS rack would do the business for ambient. They'll do lush pads, synth pianos, most of what you need. Three virtual oscillators per voice, so you can add some nice harmonics in a patch. Dirt cheap nowadays, and would leave you enough to get a reasonable laptop + audio ...

Re: Oberheim Matrix 6

I had an Oberheim Matrix 6. It had a lovely sound to it, which a touch of reverb would really bring out, but I couldn't get over the editing -- it is very involved. I prefer having a knob for almost everything on a synth, and so that's what I bought instead. Incidentally, I sold it to the guy who I ...

Re: Mini keys, copycats & 1/8 inch plugs

Odyssey mini keys - why, Korg, why? With a minor redesign, you could've had full size in almost the same case.

Re: KORG Prologue

VA? (Are we listening to the same demo?) It's a lovely sounding synth. BUT - and not wanting to turn this into a DSI thread - one thing I've appreciated with the Rev2 is the complexity of sound that the lfos and modulation matrix offer. Perfect for pads. If Korg had managed to integrate those into P...

Re: KORG Prologue

It might be tight competition between the DSI Rev 2 and the Prologue, though. IMHO it's not even close. The Rev2 has sub oscillators, 4 LFOs that can be routed to almost anything (including other LFOs), 8 separate modulation routings, and waveshaping for each waveform. It's about £100 more, but the...

Re: Are software synths disposable instruments?

Great topic. With two exceptions, I've avoided having any software instruments because of future obsolescence. Regarding other plug-ins, I tried to side-step the whole issue by just using the production and mastering effects that come from Ableton out of the box. I also some have outboard which I us...

That's right, it does. It's the set of knobs and switches on the bottom right of the front panel.

Re: Which mono synth with simple sequencer

There's also its bigger brother, the MiniBrute. It has about twice the knobs of the Micro - there's a knob or slider for everything - and a full-sized keyboard. It will happily do bass, especially tied up to a Beatstep or similar, and will quickly get nasty if you push the filter with lots of resona...
