Re: What makes a synth famous?

Some synth's that are famous may end up being that way by default because they are breakthrough instruments, like the Roland JV-1080. It was originally popular much for it's multi-timbral capabilities although by its nature had a rather non-descript sound. Now it's famous for being on so much materi...

Yamaha ES8 vs. Roland D-550

Was just noodling around on the rig and realized that the Yamaha voice Paradies (PRE4-D4) is the Yamaha shot at reproducing the D-50/550 patch Staccato Heaven (I-61). I mean it's obvious. A/B'ed the two of them on my JBL's. FWIW, the D-550 blows the Yamaha away. I always loved the Paradies voice alt...

Re: Replacing the Battery on a JX8P

You're going to have to pull the board and remove the cell with a soldering iron. The replacement gets soldered back into place. The metal portions are indeed welded to the cell case. If you're good with a soldering iron, it's a piece of cake. Getting the board out is probably the hardest part. If y...

Re: Prophet 600 vs Prophet 08

The P'08 is a programmers synth with lots of modulation capabilities and the unique "analog style" sequencer. That said it is not a basic synth with a large sweet spot. I think talented programmers could get most of what they want out of a P'08 but if your looking to just get on and have that proph...

Re: Prophet 600 vs Prophet 08

Hmm. I bought a P-600 new and used it onstage for years. I did have difficulty with the numeric keypad after a few months and learned to keep a flashlight next to it to bring up patches between songs (try using that keypad in the dark). It also had some weird crashes IIRC which required powering it ...

Re: Roland JD-800 vs. Yamaha SY-99

I hope this has been of some help. h**l yeah, and many thanks. A SY99 it is. I found one in good condition for about $650 USD, so I guess I'll go for it. I've never had an FM synth, but I played with a friend's DX7 back in the day and got a grip on it pretty quickly. Although my background is subtr...

Roland JD-800 vs. Yamaha SY-99

Considering one of these as a next acquisition to complement the rig.

Don't have a FM synth at all so the SY-99 is attractive, but folks seem to like the JD-800 as a nice synth.

What's the consensus? Do these match up someway in a shootout? Which would you want to use?
