Re: Why buy hardware synths?

Informed debate can be healthy, instructive, and fun. As I have confessed previously, I am an analogue pre-MIDI geezer trying to figure out how to revive my electronic music activities. I am gradually figuring out what is (to me) an alien landscape of computers, DAWS, VSTs, VAs, etc. I am also, by t...

Re: Tom Oberheim to show new synth on Wednesday?

i hope so too. and despite all our blue sky dreaming about a polyphonic, i still think tom is absolutely bang on with bringing back the SEM. that little beastie has always been the heart & soul of oberheim.

Re: Tom Oberheim to show new synth on Wednesday?

I wonder what kind of polysynth people would accept... The P08 seemingly has everything you would want in a conventional analog poly, and the A6 does all of that and more. Kind of hard to find a product niche. i agree that with the andy & the p08 (& code & probably others), it's beginning to look a...

Re: Tom Oberheim to show new synth on Wednesday?

i don't think anyone is hating. i think we're all extremely exited about the new SEM. most recent comments are not criticism, we're just being greedy - i think a lot of us here definitely want the SEM (i sure do), but we're also desperate for MORE OBERHEIM!!! we want the SEM AND we want tom to make ...

Re: Tom Oberheim to show new synth on Wednesday?

dave smith has a midi polychain system so what you are thinking of works for there to be a true four voice Tom will have to implement something similar thank you. i found the reference to poly chaining under dave smith's evolver, where i see it's an internal feature (circuit or coded, i guess) to a...

Re: Tom Oberheim to show new synth on Wednesday?

I wonder if it will be possible to create a four voice from the new MIDI SEMs - could you trigger each voice sequentially, as how the original worked? If you're able to link all parameters through a master MIDI keyboard simultaneously, it would be a 4 voice unit. This is the point that confuses me ...

Re: Tom Oberheim to show new synth on Wednesday?

I'm also really hoping for a new version of the four-voice. I loved how each voice would be just a little bit different - very organic. I wonder if it will be possible to create a four voice from the new MIDI SEMs - could you trigger each voice sequentially, as how the original worked?

Re: Andromeda A6 vs Minimoog

When I came across this thread, I thought that comparing the Andromeda to the Minimoog sounded ridiculous: a modern poly & a vintage monophonic. How could they be compared? Why would you want to? After reading the article & listening to the audio files, I was taken by surprise. I thought the basis b...

Re: A Valve Polysynth in a Rack with MIDI Anyone?

A box that can be played via MIDI would be sufficient. Put the same controls on as the Novachord, and don't bother with patch memories, reverb or chorus. ... If you want multitimbral, overdub it. Absolutely. This should make the unit more affordable, and be more true to the vintage Novachord vibe. ...

Re: A Valve Polysynth in a Rack with MIDI Anyone?

This is an amazing idea. I was blown away by the sound of the Novachord, & would be ecstatic at the prospect of a new tube based polysynth... provided it doesn't end up costing $10k. I will also second the proposition of a keyboard version, as I like the idea of the vintage vibe of good ol' hand-pow...

Re: Synth Technicians and Repairs

I am based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I've got an Oberheim Two-Voice SEM-based synth I dearly love & need to get repaired. A couple of posts have mentioned John Leimseider at the Cantos Music Foundation in Calgary. Can anyone comment directly on their experience with John/Cantos? Or are there any...
