Back in those days, the prices of air fares were regulated so the carriers competed with their amenities.

Deregulation changed all that.

Now they compete on price and do everything in the cheap.

Presets are fine. Use 'em. Don't use 'em. It's your synth. The idea that having them is somehow bad is misguided in my opinion. Even if you want to program your own sounds the presets won't stop you. Plus, you can use them as a starting point and modify them. That's a pretty good way to learn synthe...

I mean, why spend all tht time and effort to mimic something that's already been done?

The very best you could hope for - the pinnacle of achievement in this endeavor would result in covering absolutely no new musical ground whatsoever.
