Re: Yamaha sy99_samples/Sampler?

The SY99/SY85 is basically the same as the TG500 rack. It will accept standard MIDI sample dumps from a wave editor. That way, you just load up a wav file or aiff file into your editing software and then send it to the SY/TG via MIDI sample dump, and it then saves it to the RAM in its own format. T...

Re: Yamaha sy99_samples/Sampler?

I think midi sample dump via midi is the slowest method of getting samples into the SY99, I feel that loading from floppy is faster. As far as a sampler, most any would do (depending on what format it saves in) as you can convert most any format (such as .wav) to SY99 format via programs like Awave....

Hope you get it solved without too much of an issue. That should be a pretty decent and enjoyable synth once repaired.

Re: Yamaha DX7S battery, please help!

I just came home from work, and turned it on to check... All patches are garbled again. What a nightmare, if I knew the DX7s had such a battery issue I don't think I would have bought it. Should have researched more. Think I must get the tech to look at it again, I'm not very into troubleshooting e...

Re: Yamaha DX7S battery, please help!

(1) the solder to the battery case (this is a NO-NO !!!!) has not come loose. Yes, if you overheat the lithium battery to the extreme, they will explode...not like a grenade, but still nasty. The problem is that even if they don't pop, the heat of soldering wires directly to the battery case can da...

Re: yamaha slide knob for replacement (yamaha motif)

Yamaha tends to keep an excellent stock of most synth parts going all the way back to the original DX7 MkI. There are some things that are no longer available, but that slider button should be an easy find. The first place to check for parts is the original synth manufacturer. And I too have found t...

Re: sy77 disk drive trouble -- NOT a belt issue

Prior to replacing the belt, clean the entire drive belt contact area with cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol, drive wheel, guide pins, etc., everywhere the belt contacts the drive. After a good cleaning, then install the new belt, you should then have a few years of good service from that drive. Cl...

Re: To plug or not to plug a mixer into another mixer?

For years I used a Korg rack mount keyboard mixer to supplement the number of inputs I needed. It was a six channel mixer that I input to two channels of my 12ch Yamaha board. This setup worked quite well and never caused any problems. BTW, ignore the advice to "never" plug a mixer into another mixe...

Re: I'm curious.... DX7IID, DX5, or D50? which?

I would take the DX7IIFD's keys/action over most of the new keyboards I've played around with, though I've pretty much retired it in favor of my SY77 and SY99.

Re: I'm curious.... DX7IID, DX5, or D50? which?

i dunno - i just prefer hardware to all of my soft synths... This makes more sense if you want to operate actual pots and sliders as opposed to moving them on a screen. An FM synth is a bunch of (membrane) buttons and a tiny display. You get one slider to change one parameter at a time with. Since ...

Re: Will FM ever be sought after ???

Question is whether software FM sounds so different that it's not useful anymore.. Often you see people talking about some old FM synth, like a DX7/5/1, or even a TX816, and talking about how it sounds different than software FM synths, seemingly implying that the software is merely around to ape t...

Re: Will FM ever be sought after ???

This thread has diverged away from the OP's original question, which is whether the hardware FM synths of yesteryear will increase in value. I still say the big powerhouse digital synths from the early to mid 90's will see a resurgence someday, despite the advent of computers being able to do all t...

If you like what you are hearing, then go for it! I just did not want you to buy a TG33 thinking you were getting 4op or 6op FM when it is only 2op.

Re: Yamaha FB-01 vs other FM models

Well, great. Now, I've heard the YouTube clip attached to the TG-33 article on vintagesynth.org. Very tempting. Now, I can't decide to wait a while and stick with the Fb-01 or swipe a TG-33. Especially since it's got a slightly more advanced FM engine. But, the thing which got me on this video was ...
