Re: Yamaha FB-01 vs other FM models

That's the first time I've read a post with that position in years. There's plenty of validity to it, you know. Now, here's a loaded question: is there an FM engine incorporated into the Motif XF workstations sufficient to compete with the SY / TG models? The Motif XF (as well as the entire Motif l...

Re: Yamaha FB-01 vs other FM models

What you're saying refers indirectly back to the debate between the Oberheim OB-Xa / Prophet 5 Rev 2 versus the OB-8 / Rev 3. Are SSM chips better than Curtis chips because of the "dirtier sound"? Personally, if I had to pick one, I'd pick the Ob-8. It's about functionality, which is also why I'd f...

Or some combinations of improper gain staging can produce hiss, input impedence of your mixer/sound card should match the output impedence of your DX7IID.

Re: Best MIDI interface for Roland D-50?

I broadly agree, but I wouldn't be so disparaging of audio equipment manufacturers. They tend to be people who are passionate about music and therefore making a quality product. Yes, customer feedback is readily available via the web and it's better than simple trust, at least when it comes to prof...

Re: Best MIDI interface for Roland D-50?

If you're on a Mac, this one is super duper: http://www.snoize.com/SysExLibrarian/ He has a MIDI monitor also, which could help in diagnosing the problem. Nor is it reasonable to assume that the M Audio is any better just because it's M Audio. A brand name on a product doesn't necessarily mean anyt...

Re: Best MIDI interface for Roland D-50?

Try changing the transmission speed. Most sysex programs let you adjust it. Failing that, I don't think it's reasonable to assume that an ebay interface is the same as an M Audio. Nor is it reasonable to assume that the M Audio is any better just because it's M Audio. A brand name on a product does...

Re: New Yamaha SY77 Owner - Tact Switches, DeoxIT?

There are drive belts marketed specifically as SY77/99 replacement belts, you can usually find them on eBay easily. I buy my belts from a local supplier, an electronics repair shop. The dimensions for the drive belt on SY77/99 disk drives are 9.6"x .025" x .124". There is no non-volatile RAM for sav...

Re: Roland D-50 help.....

P.S. I tried to warn you about this stuff ! Synths are good, computers are less good, and synths AND computers together are a madening thornbush ! (lol) And that's exactly why I removed the computer from my synth rig years ago and only work from hardware sequencer, onboard drives, etc! I get to spe...

Re: Roland D-50 help.....

The DX7 and Motif XS are completely different synths... in fact, the only thing they have in common are the "Yamaha" printed on them. :) That said, if you get the Motif, it does have some sampled waveforms from the DX synths in it, and some presets based on the more popular DX7 presets, mainly elec...

Re: Yamaha standalone FM synth vs PLG150-DX

TG77's are going for around $200. For that you get: 6 operators per voice, up to four voices per patch loopable multi-stage EGs 16 part multi-timbral 16 waveforms (instead of just sine) really nice digital 24db digital filters with resonance :) As well as AWM synthesis with it's own filters and the...

Re: PA Mixer issues and questions

The Passport is a toy compared to the others you mentioned. Yamaha stuff is good sounding and reliable, I would go with that over a Behringer. I have used both for years in bar bands (i.e. abused!!!) and the Behringer stuff has had issues over time...dying channels, funky noises, etc. I would agree...

Re: Woo! Picked Up A TX7! Great Little Synth...

I'm glad to hear some positive things about the TX7 i've been seriously considering getting one or a TX802, as i've already got a DX-21 and really don't have room more boards but i love those DX7 sounds! Go for the TX802 which is the rack version of the DX7II series. I had one years ago, a very nic...

Re: Can I load D-50 syx onto D-110?

Back in the day I had both a D10 (keyboard version of D110) and a D550, got rid of the D10 in short order as it was no comparison to the D550. And as has already been said, D50/D550 sounds will not load on a D110.

Re: Yamaha DX1

BTW, I went and looked at that DX1 video on YouTube, absolutely has to be one of the worst demos I've seen/heard with the mod wheel up through the entire thing and a poor choice of voices! We can only hope somebody takes it down before FM is permanently ruined and the DX1s excellent reputation is al...
