Re: UltraNova vs. MiniNova vs. other similar VAs

You could use an external USB DVD drive. Those are cheap, and there would be no change in speed for ripping CDs, but you'd gain speed on your Mac by keeping a HD in the optical bay, because that would be on the internal SATA bus instead of USB. 500GB SSD is not a whole lot more expensive. It's stil...

Re: Arturia KeyStep

Thank you. Man, I wish that keyboard had a graphic display of the tempo, but I love everything else about it. Sorry to make you read the manual for me!

Arturia KeyStep

Looking for a MIDI controller with velocity and aftertouch and an arpeggiator. This one really impresses me from what I've seen but I have two questions: 1. Tempo control for sequencer and arpeggiator - I just see a knob that says "rate" but doesn't have numbers. Anyone know the tempo range? 2. Can ...

Re: UltraNova vs. MiniNova vs. other similar VAs

I totally get the teaching thing, been there myself! Which is partly why I like to keep old gear going- saves money for important stuff like food and shelter. I know how hard that can be when scavenging for teaching hours. I recommend teaching music technology to teenagers, very rewarding and can e...

Re: UltraNova vs. MiniNova vs. other similar VAs

Always worth backing it up and doing a clean install of music apps only. Clears out a lot of c**p. Mine is the same age. Ya those do get hot. Apple replaced the base plate for me four years ago, the rubber warped. Fine since. But keep it in an airy place and it's fine. Install an SSD, and check out...

Re: UltraNova vs. MiniNova vs. other similar VAs

Eventually my MacBook will become unreliable and I'll have to get a new laptop Why? What year is it? I have a 2009 MacBook and a 2009 iMac, both are still working perfectly for heavy music production. There are things you can do, to keep these machines fast and reliable for a good while. Focusrite ...

Re: Looking for a stand

I'm using the old Delta series from Ultimate for more than 25 years and it's still standing. A bit sign of aging, made it not as balanced as before, but still can hold a Kronos and MS-20m nicely. It's being replaced with the newer Apex series, which hopefully won't disappoint it's predecessor. The ...

Re: UltraNova vs. MiniNova vs. other similar VAs

The MiniNova has the same synthesis engine as the UltraNova. What you lose is: -- no USB audio interface -- no Automap controller feature -- minikeys vs. full size, no aftertouch -- less friendly programming interface, more menu diving MiniNova does have a pitch correction feature (like Autotune) t...

Looking for a stand

I want a keyboard stand with at least two tiers for my Yamaha SY77 and Korg DSS-1. As they weigh roughly 40 pounds each, this would need to be a very sturdy stand. I also have a Yamaha DJX (much lighter) and am considering buying a smaller, virtual-analog synth. I have a lightweight stand that I cou...

UltraNova vs. MiniNova vs. other similar VAs

Hey, I'm considering getting a VA synth. I've really enjoyed the Novation UltraNova on the occasions I've gotten to play one, and the light-up wheels are sweet too. However, I know that the MiniNova is pretty similar and cheaper. I also know that there are plenty of others out there. What would you ...

Re: Top 10 or more Synth Sounds favorite

In no particular order: 1. Basic square wave sound (think "Swingtown" by Steve Miller Band) 2. D-50 breathy/"chiff" sounds 3. Moog bass (think "Kelly Watch the Stars" by Air) 4. TB-303 with lots of portamento 5. Yamaha SY77 "LEXUS" (never heard it in a track but it's on one of the Voice Crystal SY7...

Re: What 80s songs can the DX7 Tubular Bells be heard on?

The Naked Eyes interview from E&MM tells of the making of that album, and includes references to Fairlight, a small amount of Synclavier, Prophet 5, TR808, PPG Wave 2.2, Linndrum, Simmons kit, OBXa, Emulator, and Roland Vocoder Plus - mostly the Fairlight, PPG and Prophet. Hmmm...it was probably a ...

Re: What 80s songs can the DX7 Tubular Bells be heard on?

I was going to guess "Always Something There to Remind Me" by Naked Eyes, but then I saw that it was released in 1982. Anybody know what the bells on that one are from, anyway?
