Re: Questions about the modular fascination

I was looking at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJ3dQd0xJUk The people in it talked about the uniqueness of the generated sound as "my own sound", the fact that no external (ie pre-determined) influence existed since the user started from scratch, etc.. In fact it seems that in this ty...

Re: Questions about the modular fascination

That said I'll openly admit I don't get much out of a lot of the music that is made with modulars these days, and to see them bobbing around to a shitty 808 beat making god awful noises and pretending it's avant garde is rather amusing to me. But that's more a musical preference. I think you'd be s...

Re: MFB Dominion 1

I'm lucky enough to have both and I find both awesome. There's some overlap, but sonically they're quite different. The Dom 1 is more of a Roland sound and in many ways more versatile sonically because of the different filter modes and FM capabilities. There's no way it will give you a Moog sound an...

Re: Yamaha Reface

How dare they release a keyboard that I don't necessarily want. I mean, how dare they?!

Re: Why are organs so easy to synthesize?

The playing method is typically the same as well. guitars/violins/horns/etc have a very accidental interface, whereas keyboards are very deliberate. You mean accidental like a saxophone reed accidentally being clamped to a mouthpiece and the randomly drilled holes that produce different tones when ...

Re: Electric organ, drum machine, and delay fx in the 70s

they did influence (and maybe inspire) many major electronic music acts They certainly were the precursor to the two-man bands that became common in the synth pop days (Yaz, Erasure, Tears for Fears, Ministry, etc., etc.) and have persisted to this day. On the other hand, it's not like they pulled ...

Re: Just how far have synths come in the last 20 years?

I guess the question I'm really asking the forum is whether is not the fundamental nature of synthesizers themselves has changed enough that I should feel odd investing in equipment that's not 100% up to date. For example, let's look at guitars for a moment: a modern Schecter Blackjack ATX C-1 FR a...

Re: Creative strategies in electronic music

Slicing tape together for hours is probably a creativity killer for many but Pierre Schaeffer didn't seem to mind.

Re: What's your favorite synthesis method--

Modular isn't a form of synthesis.
It's a description of the hardware.
