So if you were to make a theoretical track where, say, the pads ducked the kick drum, and the hi hats ducked the pads, and the lead ducked the hi hats, and the snare ducked the lead, and etc etc etc all around in a big circle until the kick drum ducked....iunno the fart the bassist accidentally let ...

You know what limiting is? Basically, gating is opposite of that. Its for the quieter noises like line noise or hiss, keeps the gate closed so you don't hear it until it reaches a certain level like if music starts playing then it opens the gate at specified rate. I always kind of picture a compressor as an If-then statement for volume levels. If the incoming signal exceeds -x db [threshold], then divide the volume by y [ratio] after the initial z ms [attack] and reset to typical volume after w ms [release]. The ratio says the amount of gain reduction - ie, 4...

you might feel restricted by an electribe but they do work quite well for sketches ( and aren't just for dance music ), especially the e*x's, with the 16x8 pattern size and time signature being variable and whatever. They're also quite good at say, sequencing a synth part for playback via midiout on...
