Re: The Poly 800 Appreciation Thread

My dear Poly 800 was the first keyboard I bought, more than 10 years ago now. Yes, it can sound simultaneously cold, cheesy, too sharp and very 80s, but I love it and probably always will. I do have to admit that one reason I love it is that it's real analog (DCOs notwithstanding), and it was $100 w...

Yamaha doesn't make Synthesizers

Heh. "When it comes to keyboards there are only two brands to buy, Korg and Roland. I am selling a Roland EM-303 intellagent synthesizer I paid $600 for. All the keys and bells and whistles work. My chord for it is lost and will need to be replaced through any music store or directly through Roland....

Re: Goog

Fair enough. No lecture needed. I chuckled at the cartoon. I get it about the waveforms too...I guess you meant sampled waveforms like lots of VSTi's use? Maybe...my knowledge in that area is very limited. For instance, in a VA like the Yamaha AN1X, is it a sampled waveform or is it a virtually cons...

Re: Goog

Here...this may shed some light http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkGlctY5zM4&feature=endscreen I'm not sure what "sampled oscillators" are; I've really never heard of them. It seems like they put together a real (if very basic) VA. And maybe it's not all that surprising that it sounds good (at least t...

Re: Goog

Okay...so I don't own a Mini, so this is not an expert opinion by any means...but...with three saw wave oscillators and some slight detuning (no portamento), this thing actually has that unique buzzy but very metallic clanging Mini sound that is heaven to my ears. I haven't heard that come out of ot...

Re: Goog

I figured the VSE boards would be on fire today. Actually one of my very hip sophomore students pointed it out to me. This led to an introduction for high schoolers of basic synthesis. I just *happened* to have two monotrons and Boss DR 110 handy. The rest is high school legend. And hey, VSE should ...

Re: more Korg analog - Monotron Duo & Monotron Delay

I thought I'd add more than a few cents' worth of thought here on the 'trons... Like an eager schoolboy, I pre-ordered the Monotron DUO and the DELAY version, having seen some poor demo videos on YouTube, with the assumption that the actual potential is far greater than what you see some hack doing ...

Re: Poly 800 sadness

Don,

Thanks for the info. I will check out power supply soon and see what I find.

I asked about the program memory because I never backed any of my patches up on tape...that'll teach me. I had some pretty mean ones in there...

Poly 800 sadness

I switched on my Korg Poly 800 (I am probably too attached to it) and no blinky lights. Seems dead. I've had it for about a decade and it's never given me problems. Any common problems I should look out for? I'll be taking a look at the power supply soon and hoping it's just that. If it was the back...

Re: Modular on the Oscars!

Hah! I knew it. I'm sorry about sounding stupid here...I don't know a whole lot about modulars, but it seemed very conspicuous and I wondered...and of course my wife was making fun of me for getting so excited. Just had to put my two cents in. Analog synthesis seems to be getting quite popular again...

Re: Prophet T8 DOA

Yeah, I went for it. I still feel like I got a good deal; the thing is a beauty. I do know a couple techs...deciding what to do. KB action is great still.

Prophet T8 DOA Update

Update--the machine is sold, so now it's someone else's problem. Thank you for your input! I acquired a cosmetically great SCI Prophet T8. When switched on, only the power indicator on the back comes on (so it's not the fuse) but no LED action whatsoever. I have tested the power supply (filter caps,...
