Csound thinking: outside the box

Hi everyone, of the various softsynths that I enjoy playing, I think the application that piques my curiousity most is Csound. (Anyone here using Csound currently in their work?) With all the potential and options, such as having various random filters, oscillators/sound sources, LFO speeds, etc etc...

Re: 1986 KORG DS-8... Quite Surprised!

Great stuff! I just love hearing what synths are capable of doing. Even the "unpopular" ones can impress, if you just work with them enough. FM seems to be thought of only for percussive/pianoish-type sounds, but FM can also do neat stuff with pad-like settings to. This is the stuff that I love disc...

I'd be curious to hear opinions about this synth:

Re: Aliasing and hardware synths

Hi everyone, I was just re-reading this thread about aliasing.. I've read that, the aliasing from a "single" audio signal aside, it would seem that aliasing is also an issue when there is "system overload." From SoundOnSound: Aliasing can occur either because the anti-alias filter in the A-D convert...

Re: Mixing advice please, plugins, tips etc

I was pointed to these podcasts today. At least the first 7 or 8 episodes are recommended.

Re: Aliasing and hardware synths

Yes, those are all ways although I'm not sure what you mean by "faster" digital waveforms. I think what is meant here is oversampling? But this can be done in a filter, and a VCA, and an envelope too, as well as just the oscillator. It just requires processing power. It's the done thing in (modern)...

Re: Aliasing and hardware synths

Thanks for all the great info everyone. (Sounds like this thread got Ashe37 into some good tweaking, so that's always good! :D ) So if I understand right, aliasing can be avoided/eliminated by: - raising the D/A sample rate, or - using faster digital waveforms, or - not playing above a certain frequ...

Re: Samples, soundfonts, gigfiles, oh my!

Coming back to the Soundfont realm, I also came across a similar app to Viena, called Polyphone:
Polyphone

It's cross-platform including linux, (yay!) and includes a lot of soundfonts for download.
Anyone ever tried this one?

Re: Aliasing and hardware synths

Hi everyone, thanks for your posts and links. I'm surprised to see the number of digital hardward synths that have been known to produce aliasing. Would you say that such synths have had more or less success because of the aliasing? Was there ever much discussion in the past about the occurrance (in...

Aliasing and hardware synths

Hi everyone. as some of you may know, I've been working primarily with software synthesizers in recent years. And one of the big "issues" about them seems to be the issue of aliasing. And now I've begun to wonder, what about aliasing in hardware synths? Does it occur often, even in "high end" instru...

ZynaddsubFX

Hi everyone, I came across a very inspiring video the other day about ZynaddsubFX, which I thought some of you might enjoy, here: Zynaddsubfx There is a bit of mention of FM8 here, and as I know some of you are passionate about FM8, I would love to hear your thoughts too! Not in terms of "better-wor...

Re: Synthesizers for linux

I have been looking for linux synthesizer and have tried recommended here. I have an ubunto kylin can this work on this OS? From what I see about Kylin at Distrowatch and Ubuntu , I don't see why not. Do you have Synaptic Package Manager installed? If so, open it and do a search for the synth you a...

Re: Samples, soundfonts, gigfiles, oh my!

Hi guys, thanks for the info. I'm actually more interested in understanding what advantages and disadvantages the two methods have (Motif vs. soundfont/gig/other). I'm not as interested in transferring sounds into the Motif as perhaps transferring them out (although that's not what I want to do, but...
