roland s330 sampler - the sound of it... gritty/lo-fi?

Hi, about the roland s330 12bit rack sampler which I believe is a roland w30 in a rack without the sequencer and keyboard. Does it have a nice lo-fi gritty sound to it? can you choose low sample rates? also what's the work flow on it like? do you Really need a monitor hooked up?

Zoom 9030 effects processor. Opinions?

Hi does anyone know if the zoom 9030 is still a cool effects unit today? it's a half rack job and is apparently used a lot on early Nine inch nail albums. Does anyone have one to share thoughts? Also about the ring modulator on it (or 'metallic' as they call it) is there a way you can have it 100% w...

dodgy alesis microverb 3

ok I actually got 3 of these, 2 work flawless, but there's this one that's acting up. I even put the power cables (it takes its own special AC power) from the working ones into the ill one. Basically the effects heard are not corresponding to the dial on the front. so you select a verb but you get a...

favorite Doctor Who incidental music (oldskool who, synths!)

fave classic doctor who music go! 8-) mainly on about the incidental music not the theme. Moderators will probably move this thread as it's to do with music more than general synthesizers but maybe we can turn it around to make it look like it's a synth thread  I honestly think all the 70s stuf...

Re: (old) Thompson Twins, synths?

ah yes the TTs, were a slightly different audience to Nick Kershaw and Howard Jones but all of the same era, it seems to me like they were kind of over-slept at the time maybe because of boring bands like Duran Duran  I shouldn't really comment as I was born in '85 so didn't live it but wow I ...

Re: (old) Thompson Twins, synths?

I saw them a few times in the 80's and pretty sure at times they used live: prophet 5, Juno 6/60, Jupiter 8 maybe Korg polys too. Long time ago... so memory may be playing tricks. nice, what about DX7's? I think this came out '83 or '84. I've looked around online and there's not much info about the...

(old) Thompson Twins, synths?

what kind of synths were used in this song? mainly the thick 3 chord thing near the intro

I know there's a prophet or something in the video but I don't believe that alone is making that sound.

Re: Whoever said the DBX 266XL compressor is bad is lying!

It's not bad, it's utilitarian. It doesn't do anything that you couldn't do with any other run of the mill compressor. I guess the gearslutz frown on it though :) lol if it's not a $9000 and up compressor with valves/tubes in they're not interested  seriously though before I bought it I was tr...

Whoever said the DBX 266XL compressor is bad is lying!

maybe you were just using it the wrong way! when you use it as a parallel compression, with the fastest attack/release setting and you're making dirty boombap beats, this compressor is the dogs danglers! yeah so it was under £100. but it's so disgusting on drums that it's under-rated in my opinion. ...
