Re: what were the popular synths of the early- mid 90's

That piano sound is the M1. I thought that at first, but I'm hearing some aliasing there that I don't get from my m1 that I do get from my mirage :ugeek: . For op's purpose it makes absolutely no difference though, and the m1 piano is perfect for the sound he's going for anyway. Given the provenanc...

Re: What Synth to buy.

if you're using a Mac, GarageBand should satisfy your soft-synth curiosity, and you already own it. It has simpler versions of the Logic synths, sounds good, and has a cheap upgrade path.

Re: what were the popular synths of the early- mid 90's

The Korg M/T series were nearly ubiquitous, if not mandatory back then - the JV1080 became so, and Akai S and MPCs (any model) were the main workhorses for contemporary music production in the early/mid nineties. There was always some older analog gear, often gathering dust, leaning against the wall ...

Having said that, the MKS 50 can punch its way through a brick wall if you want it to.

Re: Roland JD990 + SRJV04 or Roland XV5050 + ultimate keys?

Probably not. The JD-990 has a larger screen for editing. Now if you were talking XV-5080 + SRX-07, that might be better. I can't remember, do the XVs have ring modulation like the JD-990? Screens are basically the same on the JD990, JV2080 and the XV5080. Ring mod is present on the XVs, but they l...

Re: Cross Mod, Audio Mod, Ring Mod?

Audio mod on Dave Smith synths in particular is exponential FM of filter cutoff by one of the DCOs.

So the same as Poly Mod on the SCI Prophets?

Re: Cross Mod, Audio Mod, Ring Mod?

For what it's worth, Cross Mod on the JX 8/10 is (1) hard sync (DCO 2 locked to DCO 1), (2) cross-mod (DCO 1 and DCO 2 mod each other), similar to ring mod, and (3) 2 op FM (DCO 1 carrier, DCO 2 modulator).

Re: Jupiter-8 - how does it stack up against the JXs?

I love the Jupiter sound, but I never liked the key action. The keyboard is essentially an unweighted organ manual, but you can add dynamics to your playing with the CV inputs for both the VCA and the VCF (but it takes practice). The MKS 80 is more akin to an eight voice JP 6, rather than a racked J...

Re: Roland JV-2080

I picked up a 2080 last year, with four SR-JV boards (Orch 1, 60s & 70s, Bass & Drums, Hip Hip) for about AUD$250 - it was cheaper to buy the module than to buy the cards separately. As a synth, there is a lot of depth, and relatively easy to program due to the large screen - similar to a JD 990 or ...

Re: Yamaha DX7 vs Ensoniq ESQ-1/sq-80

...But DX7 is from another world and has infinite sounds (and is a classic and has a great keybed AND can even sound analogish when you know how). :D I concur... The Ensoniqs are very easy to program, but if you get some DX editing software ( I used to use a CX-5m and later Steinberg Synthworks on ...

Re: Roland Juno-106 vs D-50

might be a bit late, but, Roland Junos are cheap and cheerful synths designed for the beginner, or those with a modest budget - they sound good, they're easy to program, and you will learn all the basics. In contrast, the D-50 was a flagship synth, designed for the power user - in 1987 the pitch was...

I'm pretty similar, but don't forget the Portuguese are Celts too - but a Roland Super *whatever* is a thing of joy.

Re: JD-800 vs V-Synth

And then, like buses, none for ages and now there seems to be a ton of them on ebay.au - is there a VSE effect in play? No, they're just the second most produced keyboard of all time, there's always lots around. bit OT, but I'd be interested in how many actually shipped to Australia, IIRC the ESQ 1...
