Re: Korg Prophecy as a controller

I'm no pro but IMHO you're in for quite the ride. As a mono synth it's quite the little old beastie unto itself. As a controller there's just 37 keys but it's got great articulation via a nice and spongy keyboard aftertouch and the ribbon log can be quite useful. Good hunting! Yeah, I'm not buying ...

Re: Beginner looking for a good first synth/sequencer

As mentioned you can get an Ensoniq EPS-16+ for around that price, and they are great samplers. The limitation for a beginner is until you load a sample, they won't make a noise. Sampling can be a tedious skill to learn, especially if you want to loop and multisample, as opposed to sampling "one sho...

Korg Prophecy as a controller

I'm considering getting a Prophecy, primarily as a master controller for a mobile setup. My experience of modern, controller only keyboards is their build quality is pretty terrible. In addition I'd like something with a decent array of performance oriented controls, something that knobs and sliders...

Re: Kronos 88 note keybed/touchscreen thoughts.

I've never used a Kronos, but I believe the screen is not capacitive like a smart phone, it is resistive, like all the old pdas from the late 90s and early 2000s. The difference is capacitive screen can register touch without any force, resistive needs a certain amount of force to register. Resistiv...

Re: Have you noticed Roland D50 being so expensive?

Don't know about D50s, but around here (30 miles from the border) M1s sell on Craigslist for $500-$650. It's just a matter of a certain type of working musician finding it perfect for their style of music. Apparently the Z1 and Prophecy is very popular among Armenian musicians looking for an authent...

Re: Synths and You (the collection of opinions)

ASR88...ASR88 ..ENSONIQ SQ1+...ENSONIQ SQ1...ENSONIQ ASR... EPS16... SQR ..Mirage...Ensoniq Obviously.... damn! I have to admit, I've only started getting in ensoniq in the last few years, but, wow, they made some unique stuff. I currently have a ESQ-1, Mirage Rack, EPS16+ Rack, and a DP-4, and the...

Re: Synths and You (the collection of opinions)

1) The synth that made you want to play music: Synths didn't make me want to play music. I love synths, but I love piano and violin more. 2) Your first synth: Roland MT32. First and last Roland. 3) The synth that has surprised you most: Korg EX8000. Sounds surprisingly good for a basic, simple synt...

Re: Juno 60 mains lead modification (maybe )

I lean towards usability than originality, or whatever else, so I would cut the hole and add the IEC socket. I switched my EX8000s wired Korg 2 prong Connector with a normal three prong just so I wouldn't have to worry about losing the cable. I've got a bunch of synths with non-removable power cords...

Re: How raw are the raw waveforms in a rompler?

Would anyone be able to comment on the way manufacturers might doctor the waveforms to create a certain sound....ie in the forums people comment on one sound module sounding 'warmer' than another. Or a product having 'brittle digital sheen' or 'thin and plastic' etc etc. Or is it just to do with co...

Re: Transferring Sample Files to Kurzweil K2000 from laptop

A couple comments: - the Kurzweil uses FAT file system, so if you by a USB floppy (probably $10 or so) you will be able to write from a PC/Mac and read it on the K (or vice versa). The limitations are the size of file that fit on floppy, and the speed of floppy. Nonetheless, I'd suggest getting one ...

Re: MPC Live and X

I'm maybe interested in the live, but at least so far, I have no idea what sort of sound engine this thing has. Maybe someone with the touch or the MPC software can comment. I've got a great studio with lots of synths I love, but the complexity of the setup it a drag for the composition process. For...

Re: MIDI usage

The most concise explanation of MIDI sequencing: sequencer records MIDI performance, plays it back to recreate the performance, allows editing/looping/copy-pasting of the recorded data so when playing back the performance is changed. MIDI controller: keyboard doesn't have piano sound, rack unit has ...

Re: Midi module

Thanks for the replies! Nobody mentioned E-MU Vintage Keys, no fans here? There's a JV-1080 available locally but I imagine it will be difficult to obtain the expansion cards. The budget would be around 200€, therefore I don't expect world class sounds, but I thought the E-MU sounded decent enough ...

Re: Which synth was your first love or lighted your G.A.S. ?

For me, the Kurzweil K2vx (a K2000 with all the ROM expansions). They're still my favorite (have a loaded K2500 and K2661).

Re: USB CF card readers: an alternative to stacks of CF card

Well, his gear list shows Akai s5000, s2000, and s1000, and emu e6400 ultra. I know nothing about Akai, but the emu ultra can do FAT (16 I believe) so copying files off that should be no problem. If the Akais don't use fat, then dd should work, but you won't be able to use the contents on the PC, yo...
