Re: Additive synthesis? Korg Poly-800 & EX-800

It's a very crude version of something called Walsh functions, which are often used in radio signal processing but haven't gotten much use in electronic music. Walsh functions are somewhat analogous to Fourier analysis, but rely on pulse waves (of varying amplitude and duty cycle) to construct wave...

A simple way to repair microswitches on Korg EX-800

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxFYOz0DE-0 The buttons were annoying me! So I researched and discovered that you don't need to replace them with troublesome de-soldering work. You simply clean them with isoprophyl alcohol. This video covers how, in hopefully and easy to understand way. Credits to ...

Re: Additive synthesis? Korg Poly-800 & EX-800

Technically it's additive but so is detuning oscillators by octaves and fifths on any synth. The Poly 800 has no sawtooth wave and stacking up multiple squares starts to sound something like a saw but there's not really enough footages available. Even Hammond organs have nine footages (partials). A...

Re: Additive synthesis? Korg Poly-800 & EX-800

Actually I am working on the Mirage with this. With Soundprocess it's possible to Harmonically define waveforms by adjusting the levels of the first 10 Harmonics. The Mirage will then calculate the waveform. Does the Poly-800 really have no saw wave? The manual states it does...or...at least says t...

Yeah - that really explains it nicely. I bet the old organs are where they got the idea from too!

Additive synthesis? Korg Poly-800 & EX-800

The Korg Poly-800 and EX-800 have very interesting oscillators (DCOs) - they create these cool waveforms called step waves. This allows you to turn on/off harmonics at different feet intervals. The video explains how.

Is this additive synthesis?

Re: Aggregate devices (Mac) - how good it it?

Ya on the newer OS X versions, Firewire support is really a legacy thing. Which means it is not tested- Apple don't have the resources to make sure that some old Firewire driver for every single audio interface works with every build. Audio is a tiny market, so it's not justifiable. It will be fine...

Korg Volca Kick + Moogerfooger = Phat!

Adventures in sound design.

I decided to try out my moogerfooger MF-107 and MF-101 with the Korg Volca Kick. The video shows some of the timbre possibilities.

What have you guys done with the Volca Kick?

Re: Aggregate devices (Mac) - how good it it?

I have zero problems. I have a Focusrite Saffire 40 and my Motif XF aggregated for 36 channels in and 26 channels out. I have been using that for about 6 years now. I don't notice any difference between the aggregate device and using either device standalone. The DAWs care though! If I save a proje...

Aggregate devices (Mac) - how good it it?

When you run out of inputs, and you might have a few interfaces - how good is setting up aggregate devices?

what issues do you guys have? latency? daw crashes?

JD-XI interactive chord & external gear sequencing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4wP0oA_fK0&t=21s Since the firmware update 1.5 - Roland added this really cool feature on the JD-Xi called "interactive chord". The cool thing I've discovered is that since the JD-Xi sends out MIDI data from the sequencers - and the new feature transposes sequences ...

Roland System-8 & JD-Xi interactive chord JAM

https://youtu.be/TAQXWC1E8no A live jam enjoying the interactive chord feature on the JD-Xi. The System-8 is also prevalent in the video with a lead Jupiter-8 plug-out role. There's going to be another video up in a few days which goes into the details of how the interactive chord feature works wit...

Re: Have you noticed Roland D50 being so expensive?

I'm happy that I own a D-550, XP-10 and XP-30 ;) I recently got a System-8, and I've heard rumours that they might be doing a plug-out of the D-50 ... wonder what that will do to the market? probably not much, if you look at the effect the boutiques have made on the market - they've probably sparked...

He's still on the advisory board AFAIK. So he's not gone away completely. However, he's going to not live in Japan - and taking on some other roles based from London (?) ... I think he's done some amazing things at Korg - starting with that little monotron. My biggest wish is that they remake the AR...
