Re: Power supply conversion from 100V to 230V.

To confirm, have you already sourced the actual transformer? Because it seems to have different part numbers between the two voltages, so simply replacing a switch should not suffice on its own.

Re: Casio FZ-10M fails to start/freezes—only screen & LEDs l

Hi both, Thanks again! Quick reply as in a rush, probably more later :) Ta for the advice re the inverter/vreg. Will disconnect that most likely as recommended - can't hurt. Oh yeah - since' you're checking the 12V power rail for faults, make sure you actually check the big main power transformer ou...

Re: Casio FZ-10M fails to start/freezes—only screen & LEDs l

Hey, thanks for that. It's certainly very useful to know in any case. I had found plenty of stuff about the light, but I thought it was just about it going dim - I didn't realise it could take the rest of the sampler down with it. So, this added info is really handy. It'll go into my archive of usef...

Re: Casio FZ-10M fails to start/freezes—only screen & LEDs l

Ya I know I was technically incorrect (and I beat SI units into my students too) but in my defence, if we were face to face it would be understood. It apparently seemed like I was being more critical of the unit than I really was :-) Yes, it's a short. The thing drew more current. There's no cascad...

I'll be interested in buying one or two of these.

Re: Casio FZ-10M fails to start/freezes—only screen & LEDs l

I might have traced the lack of +12 V to the voltage regulator in that line. I say “might” because I sometimes got readings from it on my voltmeter, sometimes not at all. This might have been purely because it is so flipping hard to reach with the probes. It must finally have shorted as I saw a nice...

Re: Casio FZ-10M fails to start/freezes—only screen & LEDs l

Thanks for the info, but then what about milliFarads? :P Searching suggests those are not used often to cite values, but I still like to avoid ambiguity wherever possible. The tutor who taught me about SI units made sure of that. ;) intriguing: CPU RES line seems to hover around 0.12 V, whereas bein...

Re: Casio FZ-10M fails to start/freezes—only screen & LEDs l

quoting myself at GS : Yeah, checking voltages so far, I still have only one thing missing: http://i.imgur.com/NRkYXXC.png But I doubt that FD +12 V can be holding up the rest of the system; I managed to get the FDD to make disgruntled noises by feeding it power hijacked from a PC, and the FZ didn’t...

Re: Casio FZ-10M fails to start/freezes—only screen & LEDs l

Hmm, voltage across capacitor is the same as at the FDD: -0.15 V instead of +12 V… Where do I look next? Power supplies almost completely baffle me, although I’m very keen to learn.

Re: Casio FZ-10M fails to start/freezes—only screen & LEDs l

Nah, this cap is 470 u F, smaller, and gunk-free. Seeing as the gunk is confined to the larger ones, I’m now confident it’s a sort of glue – to function as a strain-relief to protect the solder joints, etc. I would gladly replace any electrolytics later, but that would require taking the PSU out alt...

Re: Battery replacement required? (Yamaha DX21)

2032 Older Yamaha synths had no defined reset procedure, just a requirement to re-load all the sounds and deliberately re-change all the options (as sometimes they can attain corrupted/illegal values and cause strange behaviour). I did this when I bought a supposedly broken DX7: it was claimed fault...

Re: Casio FZ-10M fails to start/freezes—only screen & LEDs l

In the context of avoiding wear by removing disks, I read someone saying that the FDD is one of those awful ones that will always spin as long as there is a disk in it (and why did ZIP drives have to inherit that? I thought they were meant to be better than FDs!). Well, here was a start: The FDD in ...

Re: Need replacement discs for Yamaha EX-7.

  1. There should always be preset ROM voices, so it is not possible to end up with “zero sounds”
  2. I believe EX5Tech.com has these, once you go through the registration procedure to access their Downloads page.

Re: Yamaha DX9 - Sysex broken?

There is, but in the other thread I linked above, we can see that the OP had already tried that. The option is SYS INFO UNAVAIL/AVAIL. I wonder whether the infamous battery could be responsible. As well as messing up sounds, sometimes a low/intermittent battery can cause actual operating procedures ...

Re: Yamaha DX9 - Sysex broken?

but anyway, it's not so important, the DX9 was the first synth of this DX series and it was quite basic in several areas. It’s not really the first DX. Or, at least, the race was a tie! The DX7, DX1, and DX9 were released at the same time. The DX1 was the expensive ‘pro’ version of the DX...
