Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

I gave the entire recipe already, but it seems I run out of oxygen before You understand. :( Sorry if I appeared to ignore your information, which I didn't. Lots of useful info, but I decided to replace my display instead -if my original display gets damaged there's a chance my D-110 won't have a w...

Studio Electronic SE-1 external input

I'm trying to add the external filter input modification to my Studio Electronics SE-1 but I'm unable to REPLACE the SE-1 noise source with the external input; instead I get the two sound sources at once. This isn't the way it's supposed to be, is it? There used to be a "how to" page over at Synthea...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

I agree -I prefer modifications that will let me go back to the original setup if I like. I just ordered a couple of green backlight 1602-2.1 displays as well as a new yellow/green backlit one from EastRising (Buydisplay.com) so it can look like the original one, only with a hopefully brighter backl...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

This is getting confusing. Are you sure about pins 1 and 2? I had it connected like the old display first but got no results, but when I flipped the rows (1 becomes 2, 2 becomes 1, 3 becomes 4 etc) all of a sudden the backlight worked and black boxes at least showed up on the LCD. I need to recheck ...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

OK, enough talk ;) http://i68.tinypic.com/eulvg1.jpg http://i67.tinypic.com/2gv8nmb.jpg So swapping the pins (1>2, 2>1 etc) seems to make it work. Also the backlight lights up without any separate connection (unlike the original LCD which has a cable which goes to a 2-pin connector on the D-110 PCB)...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

Good to hear you're able to see the photos now. I checked the image links in my postings, and they're all direct links so you should be able to see all my images in this thread. Yes, I still have the old display, but with the cable removed (soldered to the new display). I've ordered some new cables/...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

Ah! No wonder you couldn't see the images. Disabling Javascript in a browser typically gives problems like that as the core functionality of many websites are based on Javascript. Moving on, I've successfully removed the top part of the IDC header (which plugs into the D-110 main board), and now exp...

Re: Kraftwerk "Home computer" synth sounds

Interesting, ppg_wavecomputer. Seems similar to a pitch shifter but with a metallic ring modulator type ring to it. I'm sure these types of effect processors weren't common at the time and as always, Kraftwerk were way ahead of themselves. I hope to get a DIY 14-band analog rack vocoder finished in ...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

Huh? No picture? My posting looks fine here (Firefox), and also in another browser (Safari) both with and without logging in to this forum. The direct image link is here , but for some reason it doesn't just show that picture but it's surrounded by other photos and Tinypic info. Maybe that's what yo...

Re: Kraftwerk "Home computer" synth sounds

That's Florian tweaking the frequency shifter section of the EMS 5000 Vocoder. Most of the sequencing was done using Mini Moog and Synthanorma Sequencer or Roland MC-8 respectively. Karl Bartos is playing some bass riffs on the Korg PS-3100. Please tell more about the EMS Vocoder 5000 and how that ...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

Oops! I just took it for granted that it was a direct pin-pin replacement since the pin-layout looked the same and this particular LCD was suggested here, but having just compared the LCD pinouts from the D-110 service manual and the new display's PDF I see that only two of the pins are in the same ...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

My D-110 appears to work -I managed to get the demo songs to play, navigating "in the blind" without a display, so that's a good sign! :D (the manual is a bit misleading though: in play mode (just power the unit up) you have to press (and hold) ENTER first , then press EDIT and finally release both ...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

So I received my ERM1602SYG-2.1 a few days ago and decided to give it a go today. The pinout was the same for both old and new displays (as pointed out earlier), so I just unsoldered the connector and soldered it back on to the new display. I wasn't sure about the polarity of the LED backlight compa...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

I'll take a look when I get the new display and disassemble the D-110 again. It's strange that the LEDs have become dim when I think about it. Don't LEDs just die instead of getting fainter as time goes by? I believe CCFL or EL backlighting gets dimmer by age though. Perhaps the LCD display itself i...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

I just ordered a (yellow/green backlight version) ERM1602SYG-2.1 through the "Buydisplay" eBay store costing me a grand total of US$ 5.13 including shipping. Not bad if it works ;) I think I'll try to solder a small trimmer between pins 1 and 3 so I can experiment with different contrast settings. I...
