Re: What 80s songs can the DX7 Tubular Bells be heard on?

Back to the subject again: DX-7 Tubular bells can be heard on "Rock & roll me again" by The System

As for Harold Faltermeyer, I've just created a new thread here if anyone would like to continue to discuss his music, gear etc.

Harold Faltermeyer (80's, Beverly Hills cop, Fletch etc.)

Harold Faltermeyer is a long time 80's synth favourite of mine (along with Paul Hardcastle) who made a lot of funky synth instrumentals (but also backing tracks for songs with vocals). For those not familiar with his name, I'm sure the instrumental "Axel-F" (from the 1984 movie " Beverly Hills Cop ...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

Thanks for checking. I just received my replacement LCDs (also 1602xxx-2.1) and soldered a temporary pinhead connection (so I don't have to mess up the cables again) at the front of the PCB. It lights up as you can see (so I have the polarity right -just as you checked on your setup), but something ...

Re: What 80s songs can the DX7 Tubular Bells be heard on?

Thanks for those interview links! Actually the German one is in 3 parts, but they appear not to have linked the last part in there. Here's all 3 parts of the Harold Faltermeyer interview . Interesting stuff in the Swedish one as well, though understandably not that much from the mid-80s period which...

Re: What 80s songs can the DX7 Tubular Bells be heard on?

Harold Faltermeyer used two TX-816's (16 DX7's!) for the low bell sounds in the Top Gun anthem. It's the tubular bells preset, just slightly detuned and tweaked. That's what I read as well ( Red Bull music academy: Harold Faltermeyer's favorite synths ), but I can't help but think it might not have...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

Must admit, this is a bit too complicated for me but at least I've got the 1602 2.1 working I just received my new 1602xxx-2.1 displays and also the IDC cables/pin-headers, so my first task was to make a new cable for the old (Roland) display to get it working again, just in case..... I also find t...

Wanted: Yamaha TX-802 "service news" document

I've got a Yamaha TX-802 suffering from a distortion problem which I've been told Yamaha acknowledged and issued a "Service news" bulletin for. The only "Service news" document I've come across from Yamaha is one for the TX-81Z and DX-7 II, but nothing for the TX-802. They were both issued by Yamaha...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

I suspected we were talking past each other, something those photos confirm as I recognize it as the old display (I've been referring to the new one). Yes, I completely agree that pin 2 of the old display goes to pin 1 of the D-110 PCB and is VDD (+5V), but opposite for the new one. Actually I reali...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

Well, I gave it another go.. This time I soldered each connector pin to ensure a proper connection and re-checking with a continuity tester afterwards. Same result though, which could be due to polarity reversal of the LCD and/or the fact that I carefully removed the black metal frame out of curiosi...

Re: Studio Electronic SE-1 external input

Never mind, I figured it out myself!
There was a shortcoming in the above instructions, but now the internal noise is cancelled when external input is applied as expected.

If there's any interest I can post instructions here on this and the faster ADSR attack modification as well.

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

I gave the entire recipe already, but it seems I run out of oxygen before You understand. :( Sorry if I appeared to ignore your information, which I didn't. Lots of useful info, but I decided to replace my display instead -if my original display gets damaged there's a chance my D-110 won't have a w...

Studio Electronic SE-1 external input

I'm trying to add the external filter input modification to my Studio Electronics SE-1 but I'm unable to REPLACE the SE-1 noise source with the external input; instead I get the two sound sources at once. This isn't the way it's supposed to be, is it? There used to be a "how to" page over at Synthea...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

I agree -I prefer modifications that will let me go back to the original setup if I like. I just ordered a couple of green backlight 1602-2.1 displays as well as a new yellow/green backlit one from EastRising (Buydisplay.com) so it can look like the original one, only with a hopefully brighter backl...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

This is getting confusing. Are you sure about pins 1 and 2? I had it connected like the old display first but got no results, but when I flipped the rows (1 becomes 2, 2 becomes 1, 3 becomes 4 etc) all of a sudden the backlight worked and black boxes at least showed up on the LCD. I need to recheck ...

Re: Roland D-110 dim backlight

OK, enough talk ;) http://i68.tinypic.com/eulvg1.jpg http://i67.tinypic.com/2gv8nmb.jpg So swapping the pins (1>2, 2>1 etc) seems to make it work. Also the backlight lights up without any separate connection (unlike the original LCD which has a cable which goes to a 2-pin connector on the D-110 PCB)...
