Is this a Prophet 5 or a Roland synth? (Paul Hardcastle)

Just wondering if anyone can tell me if these brassy chords are typical of an SCI Prophet 5 or could it be something else? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNw1xMS16GI&t=1m41s (Paul Hardcastle "Forest Fire" (1985) --starting at 1m 41s) I know Paul Hardcastle used the Prophet 5 a lot back in the days, ...

Re: SCI Prophet 6 or Elka Synthex?

Oh :( I didn't know it was scrapped (this confirms it).

So how is the Prophet 6 as an 80s type synth? Can it sound as a Prophet 5 but with more to add?
Hopefully I'll get the opportunity to try it out soon.

SCI Prophet 6 or Elka Synthex?

Between the Sequential Prophet 6 and the reissue of the Elka Synthex , which one would you buy and why? I haven't really considered the Elka for my type of music (80s type funk/Electro with those fat basslines, brass, pads etc. from the likes of Paul Hardcastle, D-Train, The System, Change, George C...

Re: Non-stock LinnDrum samples

So what happens if someone has downloaded the Linndrum EPROM files from when they were actually freely/legally available? Surely Forat can't demand they erase them from their hard drives? This would be like your best friend gave you a gift, only to demand it back 2 weeks later, threatening to report...

Re: Non-stock LinnDrum samples

I think he's referring to the fact that the samples were freely available for years, then all of a sudden Forat decides to charge for them.

Re: Yamaha Dx7 iifd (no sound)

Sure :) I've ordered and received a CR-2032 battery holder for mine so I only need to desolder the battery once and can use standard CR-2032 batteries instead of the special soldereable type but haven't gotten round to installing it yet. I'm also awaiting Deoxit Faderlube which I will use to clean/l...

Re: Yamaha Dx7 iifd (no sound)

Hi Guys! I have a DXIIFD, but at the moment it sounds horrible. For every chords and note played, there’s distortion and noise that accompanies the sound. Please, what can be done to rectify this problem? Cheers! This sounds exactly like what I'm hearing from my DX-7 (mark I) which I pulled out of ...

Re: FOUND IT! Oberheim DMX Cowbell voice card

I wish I had those old style toms as well, and a better bass drum (could probably swap the existing one with a Linndrum or Linn LM-1 bassdrum) but don't want to put that much money into it right now. From what I understand you need to use a 1554 voice card for the old style (Blue monday, Rockit etc....

Re: FOUND IT! Oberheim DMX Cowbell voice card

Glad I could be of help :) Does your DMX have the old style/short toms (e.g. "Blue monday" by New order and "Rockit" by Herbie Hancock) or the new style/long toms? Mine's a later DMX with factory fitted MIDI and the newer sounds (i.e. the toms are marked "DX toms" on the EPROMs) but I'd like the old...

Re: WTB Oberheim DMX Cowbell voice card

I realize this thread is almost 2 years old, but in case the OP hasn't gotten hold of the mentioned voice card: replacement voice cards have been re-designed and are available at the DMX files website for US$ 98 each . As for the cowbell, having studied the documentation for modifying 1554 voice car...

Re: Non-stock LinnDrum samples

I suppose if you're brave enough and have the technique you could desolder the existing sockets in there and replace them with ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) sockets. On the subject of replacement sounds, does anyone know if it's somehow possible to allow for multiple sounds to be available inside an Ob...

Re: Synth editor software + hardware control?

Thanks for the suggestion even though I think the price is a bit steep. I'll see if there's a downloadable demo so I can see if it does what I'm looking for first.

Re: Quality MIDI keyboard controllers still available?

so I think there's probably a narrow choice of combined controllers which don't feel plasticky, cheap or nasty, and I think the feel is important, even if you're just messing with ideas or jamming I agree that the feel is important. If you don't like the gear you're working with and thus don't rela...

Re: Quality MIDI keyboard controllers still available?

AndrewB: nice to see others still clinging on to 80s hardware ;) How do you feel about those new keyboard controllers, such as the Akai MPK-261 I'm considering? It appears Roland just hasn't got it any more unfortunately, based on your comments on the A-37 and others' comments on the A-800 pro with ...

Synth editor software + hardware control?

Is it possible to use synth editor software (for MIDI hardware synths) and control the parameters with physical knobs/faders/switches (as part of a MIDI keyboard controller or a dedicated unit) instead of the computer mouse? I have a Yamaha TX-802, Roland MKS-70, Yamaha TX-81Z, Roland MKS-50, Roland...
