Re: FOUND IT! Oberheim DMX Cowbell voice card

I wish I had those old style toms as well, and a better bass drum (could probably swap the existing one with a Linndrum or Linn LM-1 bassdrum) but don't want to put that much money into it right now. From what I understand you need to use a 1554 voice card for the old style (Blue monday, Rockit etc....

Re: FOUND IT! Oberheim DMX Cowbell voice card

Glad I could be of help :) Does your DMX have the old style/short toms (e.g. "Blue monday" by New order and "Rockit" by Herbie Hancock) or the new style/long toms? Mine's a later DMX with factory fitted MIDI and the newer sounds (i.e. the toms are marked "DX toms" on the EPROMs) but I'd like the old...

Re: WTB Oberheim DMX Cowbell voice card

I realize this thread is almost 2 years old, but in case the OP hasn't gotten hold of the mentioned voice card: replacement voice cards have been re-designed and are available at the DMX files website for US$ 98 each . As for the cowbell, having studied the documentation for modifying 1554 voice car...

Re: Non-stock LinnDrum samples

I suppose if you're brave enough and have the technique you could desolder the existing sockets in there and replace them with ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) sockets. On the subject of replacement sounds, does anyone know if it's somehow possible to allow for multiple sounds to be available inside an Ob...

Re: Synth editor software + hardware control?

Thanks for the suggestion even though I think the price is a bit steep. I'll see if there's a downloadable demo so I can see if it does what I'm looking for first.

Re: Quality MIDI keyboard controllers still available?

so I think there's probably a narrow choice of combined controllers which don't feel plasticky, cheap or nasty, and I think the feel is important, even if you're just messing with ideas or jamming I agree that the feel is important. If you don't like the gear you're working with and thus don't rela...

Re: Quality MIDI keyboard controllers still available?

AndrewB: nice to see others still clinging on to 80s hardware ;) How do you feel about those new keyboard controllers, such as the Akai MPK-261 I'm considering? It appears Roland just hasn't got it any more unfortunately, based on your comments on the A-37 and others' comments on the A-800 pro with ...

Synth editor software + hardware control?

Is it possible to use synth editor software (for MIDI hardware synths) and control the parameters with physical knobs/faders/switches (as part of a MIDI keyboard controller or a dedicated unit) instead of the computer mouse? I have a Yamaha TX-802, Roland MKS-70, Yamaha TX-81Z, Roland MKS-50, Roland...

Re: Quality MIDI keyboard controllers still available?

I've just tried out the Akai MPK-261 and it seems very nice! I haven't actually used it though (it wasn't attached to anything), just a "hands on" touch and feel for now. I like the drum pads and see how much more fun than the keyboard as I've always done. The Roland A-800 Pro seems worth looking in...

Re: Quality MIDI keyboard controllers still available?

I've had a look at some of my gear's MIDI implementation charts, but they don't really get into that sort of detail. Most of them are pretty basic. Actually I haven't been spoilt by choices in the past, so with my MIDI hardware gear I'd be happy if I could just switch banks/patches/MIDI channels ;) ...

Re: Roland JX-8P vs. MKS-70

I concur- Side by side I can't recollect hearing any difference, but this discussion has made me curious enough to look up the schematics. Which op-amp chips exactly are we talking about? According to the JX-8P block diagram it looks like IC-67 is the culprit (and IC-66 for the headphone output) but...

Re: Quality MIDI keyboard controllers still available?

Ya that's a drool worthy collection. Thanks. And of course there's some stuff I've had and regret selling like my Linndrum and a Roland TB-303 (which at the time I practically gave away!) :x My Minimoog on the other hand was good riddance -not because of its sound of course, but I never got it to i...

Re: Quality MIDI keyboard controllers still available?

You seem to be very hung up on the notion that newer stuff is somehow inferior. MIDI is MIDI. The standards haven't changed. A new keyboard with sliders and knobs will act much the same as a twenty year old bored. I'm perfectly aware of MIDI being MIDI, but I didn't know if current keyboard control...

Re: Roland JX-8P vs. MKS-70

In which regards do those JRC op-amps sound better? Less noise? I came across a post saying they're terrible , but perhaps they're referring to a different chip than the ones in the above Roland synths (I haven't lookd at the schematics yet). I suppose if they're socketed I could easily just exchang...

Re: Quality MIDI keyboard controllers still available?

Good suggestions, but they're both weighted keyboards which isn't for me (reading closer the Roland A-30 and A-50 also have this). In fact I'm pretty happy with the keyboard action of my DX-7 (mark I) -it's way better than my JX-8P anyway, but both of them are quite (mechanically) noisy which is irr...
