Re: ENSONIQ EPS16+ & Zip Jaz drives

The most maddening issue I've had was that most of the time, the zip drives would work ok on boot. I could load sounds, and work on stuff. However, whenever I made the best patch ever made in existence, it would freeze during the saving process. When that happens enough, you'll make the switch ;) S...

Re: ENSONIQ EPS16+ & Zip Jaz drives

The reliability of those Jaz drives was very poor. I've seen them used in number of applications and they all failed within a year or two. I'd be a bit surprised to come across one that still works. I keep hearing this. I have a couple versions, SCSI. One I found at goodwill & the other a guy gave ...

Re: ENSONIQ EPS16+ & Zip Jaz drives

As far as I know the EPS16+ doesn't work with Jaz drives, as you know it does with ZIPs which seem to be a really good match, more so as the drive shuts down after 10mins of inactivity (silence). Files on the EPS16+ are not that large and the 100MB capacity makes it easier to keep a library in sect...

Re: ENSONIQ EPS16+ & Zip Jaz drives

I haven't ever gotten them to work. Waste of time. I just got the Scsi2sd and ditched all the junk storage mediums. I'll eventually do that, that's the plan. Trying to get my setup together right now, then I'll focus on the finer things ;). Good news is that I basically have more than enough peices...

ENSONIQ EPS16+ & Zip Jaz drives

I just posted this on another of my threads but I think it might be a good source on its own Has anyone had a Jaz drive that worked with an EPS16+ ? I have an early drive, I did the SCSI mod that directs power to the termination & still had no luck getting to complete the formatting process. It woul...

Re: EPS16 Plus SCSI Compatibility question

so, I tried everything I could to get an early Jaz drive to work with my EPS16+. Even performed the SCSI mod that directs power for termination. No luck. It works great with my Akai. No beans with the ENSONIQ. I purchased a Zip drive & it formatted/works flawlessly. I'd really like to know the date ...

Re: Need suggestions for a hardware sampler

What about something like the Bastl Microgranny. Its really crude but, "new". Throw in a decent memory card & you'll have all of the samples right there that you'll ever need or want to make. It can run on batteries so, you can go out & sample butterflies if your fancy strikes. 8bit is perfect for t...

Re: Why do people hate the alesis SR16?

I had an SR16, when they came out. Recently I've heard a lot of talk about the unit. Cant imagine why. It was useful, for the time. Not exactly exhilarating. Cant imaging using one for anything now. I recently picked up an old synth with a great sequencer, onboard effects & drum kits... that sound b...

Re: EPS16 Plus SCSI Compatibility question (update)

Anyone know how to find a mfg date on a Jaz drive? I have a drive with no date just serial number. Another, newer, Jaz (2gb) that has a mfg date sticker. Is there a reference chart for the older drives?

Re: EPS16 Plus SCSI Compatibility question

Hi Hyde, I happened to have one of the EPS-16 Plus units opened up so I took a pic of, what I think, should be the SCSI Board. You can see the part number on the board. If you compare those and they are identical then I think it should be okay. Robin http://i67.tinypic.com/2elecxy.jpg Numbers match...

EPS16 Plus SCSI Compatibility question

If you've followed my other thread I'm having a main board issue I'm trying to diagnose on my keyboard version. I may have a line on a rackmount version but I'm having a tough time trying to find if I can swap the scsi from my keyboard to a rackmount. I know the mainboards are incompatible for swapp...

Re: Ensoniq eps16 + main board issue

You need a logic probe instead of just a multimeter. Something like an ELENCO LP-560. They're only like $20 or so, including shipping. The general idea is to test the PSU first to make sure all your voltages are good. I'm assuming you did that. Then make sure those voltages are making it to all the...

Re: Ensoniq eps16 + main board issue

So back to logic probing the CPU... I don't have the EPS16 schematics, but it should have a Motorola 68K processor, so: Try checking the clock pin (pin 15, I think) and see if it's a steady pulse. If it's stuck either high/low/floating or pulses erratically then you've got a problem somewhere. Also...

Re: Ensoniq eps16 + main board issue

No, it's not a floppy issue. And yes, it can be the keyboard. Really the only practical way to narrow down what board it is on the EPS16 is to have a known good (working) one. Then you can swap each board in and see which one fixes it. Then you troubleshoot that bad board. That's the trouble with t...

to be doubly sure, i just pulled the scsi/memory boards, removed the attaching cabling. No change whatsoever.
