Re: Ensoniq SQ-80 Front Panel Button Problems - Please Help

Well unfortunately, it does look like the Rockwell 6500 is at fault. The whole length of trace and all of the switches pass the continuity test. It wouldn't be the first time, but double-check that there isn't a bad solder joint on the 6500 or something shorting that pin, etc. I would check that th...

Re: Ensoniq SQ-80 Front Panel Button Problems - Please Help

Also, my board is a revision A board, while these schematics are for revision C. The schematics are good for the purposes of illustration, but you don't even need them to test this issue. All you need is the general concept of how the problematic buttons are tied together. Since we know all the non...

Re: Ensoniq SQ-80 Front Panel Button Problems - Please Help

Also, I can now confirm that the buttons in question do not work while in test mode. I believe this eliminates a software issue as the potential cause. You have a problem with ROW 7 = 4, S4, ENV2, STOP, ENV1, ENV3 Get the SQ80 keypad schematics from here: http://zine.r-massive.com/ensoniq-technical...

Re: Vintage synths, are they really worth it?

My question is, are vintage synths really worth the price and headache compared to their modern counterparts or is it more of an eyecandy/synth collectors game? Run away while you still can :D Vintage has its own charms, nostalgia, whimsy, quirks, and such, and it can be fun to tinker with if you'r...

Re: Ensoniq SDP-1 User Manual

well, its not really related to the Mirage, closer related to the EPS 16 as that's the sample playback + digital filter architecture it is based on. Please back up that assertion with a logical development timeline and documentation of which Ensoniq chip(s) make the SDP better related to the EPS16 ...

Ensoniq SDP-1 User Manual

A fairly rare and not so coveted keyboard which is cousin to the Ensoniq Mirage, but seems like someone somewhere might be interested in having the instructions in PDF, so here is where I will post them. Re: Ensoniq SD-1 stuck at test mode (no boot)

How one ends up in "rack" mode?! Since everything else seem to be working and serial data (from the panel) is passing thru the keyboard board that means that the fault is probably at the KPC board? On the SD-1, this normally would be done deliberately by bridging J11 (keyboard connector) pins 17 an...

Re: Ensoniq SD-1 stuck at test mode (no boot)

I find it very weird that both the keyboard and the panel are not working.. If it was the DUART then it would not pass calibration. I suspect what you have done is bypass the keyboard processor, and now the serial comms from the display are going directly to the DUART. This automatically takes it o...

Re: Help to identify E-mu Emax 1 Rack Modification Mod

It looks like it has been modified as there are blue wires soldered to various components on the mainboard. They aren't "mods" in the sense that the owner was trying to achieve something beyond what the factory inteneded. Those blue wires are normal and added by the factory as part of an engineerin...

Re: Ensoniq EPS-16+ SCSI issue

I have an EPS16+ rack that came with a ZIP100+ and I'm sure it worked without any mods. I also put the scsi power on a switch as I found having term power on and no scsi device attached, on boot up the EPS16+ gets confused and throws a wobbley. I think it hangs, locks up. Is it possible that you ha...

I zoomed a bit on the pin11 and I can see faint serial data output periodically..But I'm not sure for the 1.38V DC..I think it should be higher.
I agree. I don't think that is proper behavior. I would say there is a good chance that replacing the DUART is the solution or at least a key part of it.

Re: Ensoniq EPS-16+ Repair (stuck in test mode)

I'm concerned about that CS pin on the UART chip since it's coming from the custom 5700 ensoniq chip directly and it's mostly stuck high. Don't make the mistake of thinking that I know everything there is to know about the EPS, VFX, or anything else. Some or all of my musings could be erroneous. It...

Re: Ensoniq EPS-16+ Repair (stuck in test mode)

The faulty EPS16+ is stuck on test mode when booting up. Sadly I don't have the schematics for the machine only the service manual. One thing that's suspicious is that the UART chip (MC68681P) is maybe preventing connections. For starters, get the EPS16 schematics: http://zine.r-massive.com/ensoniq...
