Re: Ensoniq eps16 + main board issue

So back to logic probing the CPU... I don't have the EPS16 schematics, but it should have a Motorola 68K processor, so: Try checking the clock pin (pin 15, I think) and see if it's a steady pulse. If it's stuck either high/low/floating or pulses erratically then you've got a problem somewhere. Also,...

Re: Ensoniq eps16 + main board issue

No, it's not a floppy issue. And yes, it can be the keyboard. Really the only practical way to narrow down what board it is on the EPS16 is to have a known good (working) one. Then you can swap each board in and see which one fixes it. Then you troubleshoot that bad board. That's the trouble with th...

Re: Ensoniq eps16 + main board issue

Tracking it down is going to be pretty tricky without either luck or experience on your side, but if reseating any socketed chips / ribbon cables, etc. and looking for anything visually wrong (broken traces, etc.) doesn't get you anywhere then pick up a logic probe. They're cheaper than you'd assume...

Re: AX-80 O.S. hacking co-op?

It likely works exclusively for the AX80. Like I said before, it might work for the AX60 too since it's the same era and company, but the AX80 tape out protocol is actually super weird so I would be really surprised if it works on anything non-Akai '84-86 era. And yeah, it shouldn't be all that hard...

Re: AX-80 O.S. hacking co-op?

When you say that you've programmed a decoder/encoder, do you mean a desktop app? An editor for tape dumps is desirable for me as well for both my AX80 and Juno-60. It's currently a command line program working under Windows. Input a correct WAVE file, get a binary. Input a correct binary, get a WA...

Re: AX-80 O.S. hacking co-op?

A few things ranked in order of importance: We (okay, I) need a SysEx editor to be made, whether that's a custom Ctrlr panel or MidiQuest hack, etc. doesn't particularly matter to me. Given that Ctrlr is freely available, perhaps that's preferable. But heck, why stop at one? Does anyone here burn th...

Re: SCI Prophet VS ROMs

I've never personally experienced any EPROM failures in audio equipment, so far as I am aware.

Re: Ensoniq VFX SD ROMs

I'm not sure what you mean by "unpack." They're just straight up firmware binaries. For the great majority of people, the only thing these ROMs are likely good for is upgrade/downgrade or repair purposes. To get any more mileage out of them you'd have to know Motorola 68K assembly and have (most lik...

Ensoniq VFX SD ROMs

This might be the wrong section to post these in, but I figured that somebody would have a use for them someday. They are the three socketed ROM chips in the Ensoniq VFX SD. The Ensoniq VFX SD 2.00 E784 LOWER and Ensoniq VFX SD 2.00 BF9F UPPER EPROMs are on the mainboard and Ensoniq VFX SD KPC2 v2.3...

You'll probably want the service manual, regardless of what approach you take:

Re: Yamaha tx16w sampling crushed noise issue

If you're planning on recapping it, modern caps for the power supply and input board are listed about half way down this page: http://zine.r-massive.com/recapping-classic-synths-samplers/ Oh, and I have the service manual too. It's a hardcopy, not a PDF, but if anyone has any circuit questions about...

Re: AX-80 O.S. hacking co-op?

Well, I personally prefer the labor of love approach. If there's any serious money to be had at anything then there's the inevitable rat race that comes with it, but otherwise it might have a chance to stay pure. As for updates on the AX80 scene: I'm hoping to have SysEx fully working by the end of ...

Re: AX-80 O.S. hacking co-op?

Long shot, as in, that guy's a photographer? So wrong Tamaki San? Yeah, there's that. But everyone has a hobby, especially if you're of retirement age. I don't know that former Akai engineer/exec is mutually exclusive with having some of your artwork in a photo gallery, but I clearly agree with you...
