I agree that the "non-reorder-ability" ?? of effects in Cubase prior to v4 sucks, i use SE3 myself. But about the workflow issues; templates and keyboard shortcuts/key commands really make life a whole lot easier. You can make a template with all your favourite VST synths and effects loaded, along w...

You could also get a used minidisc recorder, which nobody seems to want anymore, so they are really cheap. Most of them have digital outs, and decent preamps. It's not the simplest solution, but probably the cheapest. And you get a portable digital recorder as a bonus. I've tried it and it works, bu...

Try Plogue Bidule, it's a modular host/environment, sort of like max/msp, that can also run as a vst or vsti inside a host like live or cubase. It has a few sequencer modules, and everything can be controlled via midi. There's a time limited demo available, and you can buy an "early bird" license fo...

I appreciate everyone trying to help with the cheap and free stuff, but I have plenty of software delays that do what typical software delays do. The reason I am really only interested in the Soundtoys stuff...is because you can put it in analog mode and overdrive the inputs...just like real hardwa...

Here are some free, simple and good sounding "vintage" delays: http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1008.html http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2854.html I hardly use any other delay than the ET-200 anymore... That other one is good too, though. Also take a look at the new Dub Station: http://www.audiodamage.com/e...

Also take a look at Emulator X2 by E-mu. It's a great sampler that ships with the complete Protues 2000 soundset + a bunch of other sounds. If you're in Europe, Thomann are having a blowout sale right now: http://www.thomann.de/gb/emu_emulator_x2_mit_midi_interface.htm About 300 euros cheaper than t...

Check out this thread on KVR, has some good info:

And while it's true that simple MIDI sequencing doesn't need a powerful machine, most programs do have some minimum requirements, so you probably won't be able to run the newest Cubase or Live etc.

Try some of these freebies for loudness:

I like the Kjaerhus one the best, cause it has only one knob, so there isn't much of a lerning curve :)

I don't claim to be an authority on ambient music, but the myspace examples don't sound very "ambient" to me, but i guess we have different definitions... anyway, instead of boring rompler plugins, i would recommend a sampler, like the now free shortcircuit http://vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php and...

Hi,
I have an EX800, and i'd be happy to help out.
While otherwise the same, the EX800 lacks the digital delay of the mkII, so maybe that will be a problem?

I think that Luxonix Ravity is the closest to an old school rompler like the JV/XP series etc.
It only has 32 mb of sample rom, but still sounds pretty good.
