Re: Low cut or EQ attenuation?

Someone just pointed this out to me recently when I was mixing a live band. I used to think you should EQ everything to make it "perfect" / get flat response from your speakers/room. Then I just did a three day concert where I used almost no EQ on anything, just repositioned mics/monitors, and it so...

Is my A7 dying?

So you know: 1. My audio interface sucks and could be messed up (and I'm really hoping that it is somehow to blame, but I don't think so) 2. My power source might be ungrounded :? (I'm living in an old house this summer) and all my gear is running off of one circuit. I only began noticing this probl...

Don't spend too much money on floppy disks. Even if they look new, they don't always work.

SysEx Recorder for OS X that is NOT Sysex Librarian?

Sysex Librarian lets you select a destination output port, but not for the input when recording sysex. My midi interface sends continuous controller messages over a few of the ports, and SysEx Librarian doesn't filter those out. I want to be able to record only from Port 3. Can you think of any way ...

Re: outboard reverb...which?

As for the LXP-15, I guess I'm not so impressed by it. I didn't have time to edit it at all, but the big & medium rooms were very unrealistic. Very "lush", but very obvious and dated. The small rooms sounded better to me. Now, this reverb is probably better than most synth's internal effects or fre...

Re: The Joys of Hardware Sequencers (Story/Rant/Endorsement)

I'm amused that someone dug up this old post. In the years since then I read the f**k manual and bought Logic. I considered Live, but the effects are very bad compared to those that come with Logic. I still use the Q80 for step sequencing.

Re: Voice effect

I don't think there's any vocoding, I always thought that was filter/EQ and distortion. If you want to hear vocoding listen to the Brodinsky & Yuksek remix. You can hear the clean vocals in the DIM remix.

Re: Power Consumption in your studio.

My synthesizers only use between 15 and 30 watts each. Really not that much power, so if I'm working on a project I leave them on if I leave for a few hours. I contradict Th0mas, I don't think you'll really notice a significant increase or decrease in power bills by changing your habits. However, I ...

Re: unique/unsual features in hardware samplers

Another Ensoniq feature I really like and is pretty unique is the 'synthesised loop' function, a crossfade loop type that mashes the whole sample up into an interesting grungy tone. Yeah I tried that on the EPS, it created some very cool material, but it took forever and the sonic details were so f...

Re: outboard reverb...which?

The Wedge sounds quite lush too, and it's a great UI. any fans of the Yamaha Rev-5? Yes I'm a fan, but it's an SPX with better converters and an analogue parametric eq on the front. I've a Yamaha DMP7D digitally hooked up, it's 2.5 SPX90. The Hall is great. There's an SPX2000 at work that has the a...

Re: outboard reverb...which?

Fair call - I wouldn't get said Lexicon if I wanted realistic. Its strength, and the strength of many of Lexicon's models and algorithms is that it can deliver surreal, lush, colored places. If one is seeking something more real, transparent, and suggesting a space, I would recommend one of the t.c...

Re: outboard reverb...which?

Does anyone have soundcloud demos using the Wedge? It has a good rep on VSE, but as previously noted I didn't like the Nanoverb. Yeah what is so good about the Wedge? As for the LXP-15, I guess I'm not so impressed by it. I didn't have time to edit it at all, but the big & medium rooms were very un...

Re: unique/unsual features in hardware samplers

Roland S760 - sampling pre-trigger: can sample continuously until you press stop (and then you get the most recently sound, as far as memory allows) or you can set a trigger threshold and then keep the little bit of attack before that.
also, analog feel parameter

Re: another case of "what synth is in this song?" italo

aliens by radiorama definitely is mostly sampler based stuff... im convinced every sound is probably coming from a sampler - i noticed a lot of italo stuff uses samples of synth sounds... i think its more common in italo to hear samples of a DX7 than an actual DX7 What makes you think so in this ca...
