Re: Recent unpopularity of Wavestation?

I think I'm the only one here who thinks the wavestation sucks... I can't stand the low sound quality of the samples (and the effects unit). It looks good on paper, but I've never heard anything from the wavestation which sounded clean and sparkling like a TG77 (or maybe a K5000). To me it always h...

Re: Aww.. Roland D-50!!!

I also hear the SY77's "Ice Piano" in this track, another lovely synth in action - albeit with a lower quantity of decent factory sounds to be enjoyed. With the SY77, there are a few factory presets that are still fresh, even more so than the D50. But the majority of them are much worse. Agreed. It...

Re: 'Self' Ringmod?

Basically the effect is the output frequency is 2x the input frequency. You could probably test that with a sine wave input. As far as why they sound distorted, what you've done is basically convert the signal to its 2nd order harmonic counterpart. 2nd order harmonics are a type of distortion, so y...

Yeah WTF. None of my other synths get anywhere near as hot as the EPS (even with a huge heatsink) gets.
Unreasonably sketchy DACs also.

Re: Lexicon LXP-15 / using reverb & delay live

Some bands I completely bury the vocal in reverb, some I mix dry. Really? What wet/dry percentage do you mean by that? I ask because I had a very bad experience with that a few weeks ago. The band wanted a Holy Grail reverb pedal on their lead vocalist (set to 70% or something!) and they wouldn't l...

'Self' Ringmod?

I'm always criticizing Yamaha's mid-range effects processors, but the 01x has one very interesting effect; for the ringmod effect, you can choose 'self' (the same signal as the input) instead of an oscillator. I've never encountered this effect before, but it creates a very unique type of distortion...

Re: A Universal Editor/Librarian for Hardware?

MidiQuest/SoundQuest supports a lot, but it crashes and is buggy. I haven't used JSynthLib recently, but it wasn't any good either. Unisyn is the best I've used. Too bad it doesn't work on 10.6 I'm interested in this Ctrlr project. I don't know anything about coding, but if there was an easy way I'd...

Lexicon LXP-15 / using reverb & delay live

I'm borrowing one of these right now (it needed some deoxidization on the input knob and the buttons). I'm going to be using this, a TC D-two, and a Lexicon MPX-100 (neither of which I've tested yet) for live effects for normal bands. Anyway, I like the medium/small rooms on the LXP-15, but the hall...

Re: help me make the leap from software to hardware sampling

I completely understand where you're coming from. I used the software samplers in Reason for a long time, and while those aren't top of the line softsamplers, the hardware samplers I've used have had MUCH better sound quality. I want to put in the good word for the Roland S-7xx series. As hardware s...

Re: Bass sound in Imagination's Just An Illusion

Oh yeah, I was thinking about this a lot in September. There's a similar bassline with more slides in 'Music and Lights'. The actual bass sound itself is pretty standard, but it's the technique or sequencing that's really making it. My guess is that they are turning the portamento on and off in conj...

Re: SCSI Zip Drive weirdness.

So apparently the 2000xl can't format IBM formatted zip disks or S760 formatted disks, but it can format Mac disks just fine.

SCSI Zip Drive weirdness.

So I'm trying to get this Iomega Zip 100 SCSI zip drive to work with an Akai MPC2000XL. I found a HD50 to DB25 adaptor, and I was able to load files from a zip disk I made on my Roland S760 onto the MPC. However, when I tried to format that disk on the MPC I got "DOS Error". WTF? I also found an uno...
