Re: Hardware Sampler Question (Mostly just "why")

The EPS is pretty happy with 1.44MBs thankfully, the head is up to the task of writing the HD disk medium unlike some of the other samplers off the time (S-50 etc). It'll just format them as 720K. A lot of HD floppies are also starting to get a bit sketchy now though. I seem to remember the EPS bein...

Re: Why can't they build them like this?

The PDP-1's a beauty alright :) I just wish I could manage to get down to the Computer History Museum on the occasions where they're demoing theirs... Yeah, I made the CHM a priority when I came over to the 'States earlier in the year, but it was the wrong week for the PDP-1 demo. Still totally wor...

Re: How do guitar synthesizers work?

It'd just be doing a bit of FFT analysis. Convert the audio from time domain to frequency domain, run an algorithm that picks out the fundamentals present in the spectrum, then interpret it into MIDI data. With the processing power available these days, it's not a particularly difficult problem.

Re: Whats your current computer setup like?

It seemed easy enough to get around in, and all I just cant imagine it as a desktop OS. I didn't really gel with Ubuntu until I installed Lubuntu and Xubuntu on a couple of machines. Putting a lightweight desktop environment on top really makes it a much more pleasant, responsive, and familiar syst...

The engineer in me finds the thought of that signal path horrifying.

I owned one of these for a while, and to be honest I can't remember a single thing about it. That's probably telling.

Re: Spring Reverbs

It is one heck of a bizarre piece of vintage technology but very clever (see US Patent 3136853) - it uses 1960s all tube technology to modulate the incoming audio at 40KHz which is then passed into the centre of the folded spring by a piezoceramic transducer and the resulting signals off each end o...

Re: Whats your current computer setup like?

Looks like quad cores with 16gb ram are where its at. That was my old computer... a 2008 Mac Pro. Actually, I think 16GB is overkill for the vast majority of audio work. The only reason mine's got that much is because I work in animation and motion graphics, and I wanted to be able to work on stuff...

Re: Whats your current computer setup like?

Quad core i5 (can't remember what clock speed), 16GB DDR3 RAM, SSD system drive and two hard drives. Windows 7 64-bit, MOTU DP8. Though to be honest, I use very little in the way of plugin effects and instruments. I do like having the power on tap to use external software like PureData and Granulab ...

Re: KAWAI K5000 Cool Blue LCD!

This makes me want to crack open my S3000XL and see if there's a modern high-contrast screen that can be made to work. It still gets a fair bit of use, but the display contrast is atrocious.

Yeah, I've just replaced those with IEC sockets in the past. Usually a couple minutes' work with a file and a soldering iron.

Re: Power electronics / noise

I actually just saw Nurse With Wound live a couple weeks ago, and the contrast between the openers and Mr. Stapleton's stuff was pretty interesting. After the usual assortment of boring laptop droning with the odd beat or noise burst thrown in, the NWW stuff just sounded so directed and purposeful a...

Re: Reason, Renoise, Fruity Loops or other?

Also remember that MOTU Digital Performer is now Windows-compatible too, and has a similar MIDI-focussed history.

I've been trialing it on Win7 and it's been working very well for a recent port.
