Re: Recapping a Jupiter-4

EDIT: Turns out the transformer is fine and I believe I've narrowed down the problem. I replaced the 1A fuse which I thought was good and the Jupe powered up, but one of the fuses I replaced yesterday blew. I looked over the schematic for the power supply board and I think one of the bridge rectifie...

Re: Roland Jupiter-50 announced

I've only seen one Jupiter-80 and had the chance to try it out at a local music shop. I wasn't impressed at all and I thought it was sacrilege to model it after the Jupiter-8 when it clearly wasn't worthy of the name. Honestly I wish Roland would wise up and offer something interesting for once inst...

Re: Recapping a Jupiter-4

Actually got some time today to do those checks. All my joints check out, including the one where I had to fix a busted pad. I also wiped over the voice cards and motherboard so I would avoid any potential shorts. I also tracked some new fuses and got those put in as well. Unfortunately, when I plug...

Re: Recapping a Jupiter-4

what craziness? its a necessary evil. and, its not just caps because there are plenty of other components that break down (or will start breaking down soon). failing logic chips, voltage regulators, dram, etc the list goes on and on. Agreed. You wouldn't believe how many of those caps I removed act...

Re: Recapping a Jupiter-4

I'm in the midst of examining the Jupe while I wait to get new fuses and I managed to take the time to evaluate my work and see just where the wires on the underside of the motherboard went to. Most of my joints were good, but there are some on the voice cards that need touching up and I noticed one...

Re: Synths that you loved before, but have now gone off

I used to be big on my JX-10 for most of the time I owned it. I still think it's a monster of a synth and there are times where I miss having a twin-oscillator polysynth with the flexibility that the JX had. But on the other hand, the Alpha Dial got annoying for programming and PG-800s were starting...

My iron doesn't list the temperatures in degrees, just from 1 to 5. I had it about medium heat, enough to get the solder flowing really well but not hot enough to cause significant damage.

Re: Recapping a Jupiter-4

Thanks for the advice, I'll double check the motherboard this weekend when I have time. I know the PSU is fine aside from the blown fuses so I won't be messing with that anymore. I have a hunch that it might be the wires under the motherboard, as those were hard to get to and I'm not completely sure...

Re: Juno 106 crackly chorus

Just yank the caps off, they won't break as long as you pull them out straight and not at an angle. If the sliders themselves are bent, you could try carefully bending them back with some pliers.

Re: Recapping a Jupiter-4

Come to think of it, I did run into a couple of lifted pads as I was removing the old caps. One got bad enough to the point where I had to repair it with some wire, but the other I wasn't too sure about. I also had to remove some wires on the underside of the motherboard in order to remove it from t...

The music for the first few seasons is full of D-50 and DX7 for what it's worth.

Re: Thinking about trading my Juno 106

Well, I'm not entirely ruling out modern synths but I am still leaning heavily towards vintage stuff. The Mopho looks nice but I don't have a standalone MIDI controller and I'm not too big on desktop modules. The MiniBrute looks pretty cool and if I can get over $550 for my Juno I'd consider it. I'v...

nathanscribe wrote:Old connectors can act up when unplugged and re-plugged. Try cleaning the inter-board connectors.
I'll go ahead and try that after I replace the fuses.
nathanscribe wrote: What's the internal battery like?
It's good, I didn't see any signs of leakage and it's away from the motherboard so that can't be a factor.

Re: Recapping a Jupiter-4

Could there be a cap in backwards somewhere? Did you calibrate the power supply after? I double checked both the polarities of all the new caps and all my solder joints, and they all checked out. If one of the caps was backwards it would have popped so I'm absolutely sure I installed the new caps c...

Re: Recapping a Jupiter-4

Just finished replacing all of the caps on the motherboard, all four voice cards, the master board and most of the caps on the power supply (all three filter caps were replaced though). However, it started acting really weird after powering it on; the overdrive LED on the VCA section was constantly ...
