Re: Akai Pro and Alesis... remarkable similarities

The Miniak and Micron are the same exact instrument under the hood. As is the Ion -- MINUS the sequencer and "finishing FX" (reverb, delay) -- but PLUS those wonderful knobs, extra mod wheel, and bigger keyboard range. The Ion simply has a better performance-based control surface. Which is why I bo...

Re: How analog does the ESQ-1 sound?

If you want a deeper "analog brass" and "analog strings" sound (produced via actual voltage controlled filters, which it has), it's worth getting. I keep a Kawai K3M in my rack just for that purpose, to layer it up with the brass and strings from my digital synths (to create a "beefier" bottom end t...

Re: How is the Alesis Ion in your opinon?

If you are in a prog rock tribute band (like the one I recently joined), or any situation that calls for vintage 70s style sounds, the Ion is really the perfect lead synth for the job. The Ion sound designers programmed a ton of vintage sounds in there, so finding the right sound for the job (like n...

Re: what are some good affordable rack mounts?

Don't forget the lovely Kawai K3M. Digital waves with analog filters -- similar to Korg EX-8000 and Ensoniq ESQm. I have one in my rack and snagged it for $150. Sweet. (Also much easier to program than the other two; every parameter has a dedicated button.)

Re: CS 80 sounds on a budget

If it's only the BladeRunner sound you're after, you've got a lot of options. I remember programming a perfect BR patch on a Korg DSS1, for instance. You can do that on a lot of synths.... But if you really want the distinctive sound of CS80 including stuff like its ring modulator, filter type, etc....

Re: Landed a CHEAP DX7....almost too cheap.

At this price point, the DX7 is practically being given to you for free. The $10 pretty much serves as a gratuity for having received said "gift". Even if you don't like the FM sounds, it makes an excellent MIDI controller board for keyboardists. The keybed action is one of the best on any synth, an...

Re: becoming a Subtractive Synthesis Wizard

Most likely the presets in the Micron that amaze you have a lot more going on than just VCO, filter, VCA and LFO. These sounds are probably utilizing the modulation matrix, which as you know most synthesizers don't have. Understanding the mod matrix is not a beginners thing. It takes time.

Re: Korg DW8000 opinions please

If the DW-8000 falls through, don't forget the DSS-1. Covers same ground yet a whole lot more, and eternally underrated. Damn right about that. 8-) I lusted after this one a year after buying my DW back in the 80s, but couldn't afford it. Finally got one in '03 and had it up until about '10. It's a...

Re: Korg DW8000 opinions please

This was my first synth purchased new in Jan. 1986 and I held onto it for over 20 years. About a year ago I decided I needed a good hybrid synth with analog filters back in my setup, for beefier brass and warmer strings to layer up with my all-digital synths, but I wanted a rack version. Instead of ...

Re: Collecting, eBay and Synth Economics

I have to agree with the statement that eBay CLOSING prices (averaging them) is the best indicator of what a synth is currently worth. Of course, that price fluctuates from day to day, and there are periodic spikes in price on many synths due to speculator activity that slowly comes back down as soo...

Re: Ensoniq ESQ-1 as MIDI controller problems!

Try hooking the ESQ-1 up to something else to see if the problem is indeed the unit and not something else (cable?). A good idea is to hook it up to a PC running MIDI-OX or SendSX, and see what (if any) MIDI messages the ESQ is sending out. Note that some synths actually have a MIDI Transmit On/Off ...

Re: Do you align keys on your keyboards on multi-tier stands

Aligning the keys note-for-note offers me no apparent advantage. I can recognize and quickly reach the desired key(s) on any board on any tier no matter how each board is positioned. Instead, my preference is for each board (full length of the board, not just the keybed portion) to be more or less c...

Re: First time I've been WOWed by a synth's sound on YouTube

A Korg DW6000/8000 can get you some ways toward this sound with its fixed digital waveforms and analog filters (same with Kawai K3 and Ensoniq ESQ1). A Korg DSS-1 (released a year later) will allow you to draw your own digital waveforms like on the Waveterm (no waveform display, though). You do this...

Re: New JX-10 Pros/cons/tips?

Can anyone comment on the JX-10 vs. the Ensoniq ESQ-1/SQ-80? The 80 has been my goto mid-80 digi-ana poly forever, and will continue to do so, but I wondering what I might gain from a JX-10... I expect they are smoother, lusher. But so much that these two compliment each other, or do they really ov...
