Synergy 1032 Lives Again!

Postby HideawayStudio » Sun Mar 08, 2015 6:08 pm

I seem to inadvertently be on a mission to return every remaining GDS and Synergy II+ to working order!

The last two weeks have been the resurrection of 1981 Synergy number 1032. This example (my 6th) has been particularly tough - so much wrong with this one beast - I literally have a jam jar full of nearly 100 dead/dying/tarnished/broken components that had to be replaced.

What I can say now with absolute conviction is that anyone trying their chances running one of these things without a full recap is really pushing their luck - every example I've seen to date has suffered damage due to dead short tantalum caps and in this case the transformer for the linear rails had burnt out to the point the secondary windings were open circuit.

Having finally got the entire system running again yesterday evening including the SynHCS voice editor on the Kaypro II under HxC disk emulation I celebrated by recording a test improv made using a patch programmed up on the SynHCS editor.

What transpired is actually a rather nice example of the bizarre continuously variable random vibrato feature on the Synergy which can be used to great effect from subtle complex wobbles to completely crazy FX.

I strongly feel these rather bizarre old digital synths still have a lot to be explored...

That's very cool sounding! The start was like a variation on the THX sound.

Just wow. It must be so much fun playing these instruments after you have restored them.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Thanks, Dan.

Now you've successfully refuelled my desire for a Synergy...

Another evening has slipped away whilst trying my best to get my head around programming the Synergy in the SynHCS editor. I am quite determined to hold this instrument in a different light to maybe what many have heard of it and move away from the usual marimba and glockenspiels a plenty and explore something much more complex, sustained and evolving. With up to 16 loopable stages in each envelope on each oscillator it clearly is capable of doing just this!

Not only does in fact the instrument have an envelope per oscillator but all the parameters are doubled - one set for gentle key presses and one set for hard.. and they are morphed between the two...

The mind boggles!

Here is another test recording from 1982 Synergy II+ number 1032 running under the SynHCS voice editor shortly following a major overhaul and return to operation. This live improvisation is a demonstration of the potential fluidity of such evolving timbres.

This is the tip of the iceberg.. there is a h**l of a lot more to discover here.

I am looking to replace my aging Synergy Host Control System software as Ive completely worn out the disks. I started w/ version 3.22 then worked with older versions (3.18, 3.15, 3.12, etc...). Please let me know if you would be willing to help get me a working copy. I also have every voice cartridge on disk that Wendy Carlos created as well as disc for VC 1-6. Let me know if you interested in that. I still have some working 5.25 discs.

Definitely still worth exploring. I have had a lot of fun creating algorithms that use all 32 oscillators, which reduces the synergy to only a few voices but then I sample that. Using synth swipe on the Emulator x3 its rather effortless to create some awesome voices that capture the velocity tinker changes.

In any case if you can point me to a software resource I'd love to get to voicing again.

Many thanks,
}+{

Where are you located? If someone can hook me up with disk images and/or archives for the software I've got a Kaypro I'd be happy to write disks with. And yes, definitely share them goodies.

Geez, I really do need to get off my a*s and try to get my Synergy working...

Does it have the dreaded motherboard/daughterboard disconnection problem? Mine had come unseated in transit and I didn't have the patience to deal with it. So I sold it to Silikon.

I wonder what happened to Silikon... :-|

Nah, mine is actually almost working normally except for keying issues (a couple missing plastic bits I need to finish hacking up 3D-printed replacements for, and some issue in the key scanner that makes release not work.) I think I actually know a couple possible things that could be causing the problem, I just need to sit my a*s down and test my theories out...

Thanks commodorejohn, I'm in Magnolia Texas. I have several working Kaypros but appreciate the offer. Synhcs 3.22 would be the holy grail.
