I have one. It's a fine workstation rompler thing. I haven't used it for 2 years though because I lent it to a friend.

It was my first synth. It has an ok (monophonic) VA in it which you can layer with some rompler sounds for nice effects.

Sampling on it? Forget about it. It's too cryptic for that... Sequencing is fine though.

It can get really deep in the menus and it feels like there are perhaps too many options for its own good. But if that's your cup of tea, then it is very thoroughly programmable indeed.

Very nice keyboard with aftertouch.

It's got great electric pianos!

Hmm. This sure sounds like a BUYER'S GUIDE question to me...

im an EX7 owner. its the little brother of the EX5.

ive had mine for a few years and it can do some pretty good tricks. with re- sampling the VA and 4 voice architecture gets even bigger and ive pulled off some wave sequencing tricks that ultimately lead to the decision to actually buy a wavestation.

that said, the OS is very menu intensive, but if you have the time and patience it can be a rewarding piece of gear.

Yamaha EX-5 Any fans? You bet. This is a classic. I have used mine for nearly 10 years now. I think it's still sounds and look fantastic. Beautiful proffessional design, nice blue colour, big & bold, 76 keys, nice display, good effects and can sound as warm and deep as any analog synth.
Btw, the AN section onboard is not resttrricted to monophonic as it can be set to duophonic as well. I have also used the sampling section onboard a lot (I have sampled sounds from Mellotron and string machines, drum machines, organs and flute etc. ) and it's not that hard to understand. The user interface for the sampling part was a bit obsolete for its time, but can be familiar to those who used the Akai S-900 in the 80'. Of course it has some flaws that have been heavily discussed on the net already, amongst other CPU restrictions in multi-timbral mode and slow SCSi connection.

It´s my work horse, second to the Hammond C3. I love the warmth, but I´d like it to be less gloomy when it comes to analogue pads.
Except for that, and having problems with getting-more-than-two-patches-in-a-performance-like everyone-else, I´d like to know if it is possible to save sequences without deleting patches. I don´t have the EX5 next to me right now, but I think the same issue appeares when using a disk of patches too. It deletes RAM from patch 1 and up to as much as it needs, or?

the EX5 is arguably Yamaha's last great synth and perhaps their most underrated. I wouldn't recommend one to someone looking for a workstation, but rather an amazing and deep synth that has a few extras.

by combining AWM sample-based synthesis with the AN (analog modeling) and VL engines (physical modeling) and FDSP, the EX5 is an incredibly expressive synth that covers a wide range of sounds from typical instruments to analog standards and then far beyond. in my opinion it is Yamaha's best following the CS-80, but the SY99 is a close third.

Mostly agree with _seph (I'd put the SY99(and SY77) second and the EX5 third!!) :-)

Philly - check out my post on the Yamaha VL1/7 thread on the 2nd page of this forum for a description of some of the EX5 features and capabilities.

I've got an EX5. I'm trying to set it up with a computer USB. I bought a product like the UX16 since I didn't know about the UX16 at the time, but so far I can't see that my computer recognizes it. Is the UX16 a requirement or has anyone had luck connecting to a computer with a similar device?

Any MIDI interface will work. Did you install the drivers for the UX16? It's not class compliant.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

I've tried to install the driver but it fails because it doesn't find anything attached. UM3141x86 from the Yamaha website for the UX16 :-( Is there another?
