MiniMoog bargain clone wars heat up

Post by meatballfulton » Wed Jun 28, 2017 1:06 pm

Sweetwater now shows both the Behringer D and Roland SE-02 Minimoog clones as preorders. The Behringer is $299  and "shipping in September", the Roland $499. Makes the Karp Odyssey look overpriced, eh?

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

It was up earlier today, and indeed with the $299 price tag.

One of these *cough* "accidental leaks", I suppose. And, hey - they were successful: We're discussing it now ;).

299 and looks bigger (hard to tell the scale) so Behringer has that going. I hate the tiny crab hands roland boutique aesthetic.

Ya the small controls on the Roland are not good. But the Roland has XMod and a proper ADSR for the VCA. Neither box has patch memories, is that correct?

Roland has patch memory and sequencer - it isn't direct mini clone.

Excuse me for seeming a bit fik, but that Beh. minimoog layout synth, how come a patent or copyright hasn't been infringed?
Either way at $299 aka £299 I think I want one.

There's a time limit on trademarks AFAIK. Moog's rights to that are long gone.

If the B*hringer has background hiss and bleed over that some of their other products have had in my personal experience, then I'll give it miss. But the KARP Odyssey? Still not a bad price for what you get, especially the rack.

The real question is, how are Moog going to respond to this?

Apparently that's not the reason.
Moog themselves wrote:Orders for the synthesizer quickly outpaced our initial estimates, leading to the addition of a night-shift to meet demand for the iconic instrument. Our parts-inventory for the Minimoog Model D project was originally expected to span multiple years of manufacturing, but is being consumed at a much higher rate than anticipated. Thus, this second historical production run of the Minimoog Model D will reach completion much earlier than intended, and this marks the final opportunity to acquire a new Minimoog Model D.

That's a shame. Why are they stopping? Can't they just buy more parts? Surely there's enough demand to justify manufacturing more of those old transistors they talk about. Maybe the night-shift is too expensive?

They said that they had old transistors used in filter reissued for them (TIS97 I suppose?) - maybe it was one-off batch, and they ran out of these? If you ask me, probably any general-purpose npn (like ubiquitous BC548) would work as well, but I understand that they wanted to keep it as authentic as possible.

Ya I edited my post there when I learned about that transistor. Surely there's enough demand to get more of those manufactured. But I assume Moog have a business strategy here. Maybe they have something new up their sleeve- they are moving on from the MiniMoog, and ironically everyone else will have to catch up with them!
