Both are great. The original model has more magic in its sound, but the DX7-II has a bunch of useful performance features that make it significantly superior for live work. I have both (or rather, I have a DX7-II and a TX7 Mk.I-in-a-box module) because they're just that great.

I have a chance at a DX7 Original with 4 ROM cards for $600
Or a DX7IIE for $550.

These will NOT be used outside of my home. I might use them MIDI.

If you're not using it live and you have to pick only one or the other, I'd definitely go with the original, because yeah, pure magic.

Then you can grab a TX802 for the unison mode :D

The TX802 hasn't got a unison mode as such but it can easily be replicated by allocating the same 'voice' (patch) to all eight generators and detuning them. And you still get 2-voice polyphony! Just bought one with a RAM4 cartridge.

DX7IID for the keyboard, better output quality, layering and stereo facilities, better MIDI, and for not being brown.

Aren't keyboards the same between the two?

Yeah, as far as I can tell the keybed is exactly the same.

From desmond's awesome resource of old magazines, this is Brian Eno:

"...there's something wrong with the programming of envelope generator four on the original DX7 and you can use that to create non-repeating patches. If you have that set to a value under 50, you'll find that the synthesiser behaves unpredictably. Unfortunately they've sorted this out on the second generation of DX7s, so I still use the first one, and that's an important element of quite a few of my patches."

http://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/eno-sense/2245

Which also answers my own question :)

It explains why the Eno DX-7 patches I put in a DX-7 a few years ago, did not translate to FM8 100% accurately.

Try it yourself! Here is a DX-7 bank with the four Eno patches (from keyobard magazine I think) mixed in with some other random presetty stuff.

Even if the keybed is the same, the DX7II is a better "keyboard" as it outputs a higher range of velocities, and has better MIDI features. The DX7II keyboard is probably my favourite synth-action keyboard ever, and while it's also supposedly the same keybed in the Wavestation, my WS feels and sounds quite different to the DX7S/II, hence I prefer the DX version.
