First Year/Month Juno 106 have you seen this?

Hey everyone! I just picked up a Roland Juno 106. Maybe my 17th one I have owned, haha. Well this one is the first one that I have ever seen something like this on the module board. 2 wave chips are inserted in each single row of pins where the single wave chip normally goes. What the heck?





Has anyone else come across this? The board doesn't look like it has had any previous work done to it, and when I first saw it I was like, wow jackpot! The typical Juno 106 Wave chip is a MC5543A and these chips are MC5543. No A. But there is an "A" or "B" written on the back of each of these chips. Perhaps one is for the square wave and one is for the triangle wave because the MC5543A has both onboard.



Just wanted to share. What do you all think?

38. So I'm thinking that would be January of 1984. Also, sorry for the huge pics, I'm not are how to get them the right size. I have had 2 from March of 1984. They had the regular wave chips. However they did have the metal portamento switch. Everything else is the same. After having so many juno 106's come through I have learned that these things took a serious beating in the last 30 years but really still sound great!

Mine´s exactly like that too. I mean just the module board with the twin chips. Bought it on Ebay as a replacement part, from Japan. It´s all in the Service Notes, page 2, Parts Change...

What they don´t tell you though is the older module boards aren´t fully compatible with the newer ones due to the lack of the extra connector for the black and white wires coming from the jack board. A modification is necessary for the TUNE pot and LFO SENS slider to work. I was puzzled by this for quite some time and only discovered this fix yesterday. PHEW! It´s not written anywhere. I guess that´s because there are probably not many later 106s out there with old module boards inside.
