Accessing Yamaha PLG150-DX sounds on Yamaha DX200?

Postby Linas » Sat Aug 05, 2017 2:48 pm

They say that there is full Yamaha PLG150-DX inside of the Yamaha DX200, for the FM synth section.

I tried to access these PLG150-DX sound banks using MSB and LSB numbers from the PLG150-DX manual, that doesn't work. PLG150-DX is here and not removed (as sometimes happens), I can access DX200 native patterns - 256 factory presets and 128 user patterns, but not these all 912 PLG150-DX sounds. Or are they somehow locked, once the PLG150-DX is inside of DX200? I guess the host device dictates its own rules here, by remapping the bank and patch numbers of incoming MIDI messages and controlling which of the original PLG150-DX sounds are accessible, and which are not. But why in the world Yamaha would do this, discarding the rest of PLG150-DX's potential?

I know I can upload these PLG150-DX sysexes (or rather, dx2 files). What I want is to have the PLG150-DX sounds all at once at my fingertips, for quick search for the right sounds. Or is it impossible? Does anybody know a hidden magical command to unlock it, by switching the DX200 to a "PLG150-DX mode"? What adds to the mystery is that there is no reference to these 912 sounds (or 912-256=656) in the DX200 manual...

I think we have a misunderstanding here. The DX200 is a PLG150-DX, with knobs on (plus sequencer, drum machine, effects and resonant LPF). When you use the DX200, you are using a PLG150-DX :). AFAIK know, the patch memory depends on the device the PLG150-DX is plugged in to. Some Yamaha keyboards have more memory than the DX200 has.

The DX200 will load DX-7 SysEx files. You obviously have that working, so you have tons of sounds to play with. I guess what you're really looking for is a way to manage the memory? Check out MIDIQuest.

MIDIQuest, good idea, thanks. But wait - PLG150-DX has 912 patches available. DX200 - only 384, as 256 factory patterns and 128 user patterns. So they are here inside, but inaccessible, locked. So, when I use DX200, I use PLG150-DX, but not quite the same - it appears to be enhanced in one way, but deprived in another?

For some reason, I needed access to all 912 PLG sounds at once, for quick search, not as separate portions of banks of 128 sounds - like, upload this sysex, go through it, upload another, go through it, upload the third, but maybe the patch 108 was better on the first, upload the first again, no wait, maybe on the third this was better, upload the third again... Would it be TX7 or DX7, it would be the only way, and with banks of 32 voices.

So I have these sysexes of the PLG150-DX voices, 7 banks. But they are already here in the hardware, all 912 at once, somewhere, theoretically... why can't I use them :?

==========================================================

Edited: finally, got it: patch memory of the host device. As the host instruments take the PLG150-DX sounds as the waveforms only, possibly. Then, nothing can be done here. Thanks for helping grasp it.

I used to know how to do this...been seven years since I did it, though. This is from memory.

Do you have the user manual? On page 36, the card's very complex voice map is documented. You will notice that there are a number of banks to be selected, all have an MSB and LSB. If you send MIDI program change messages to the DX200 starting with the bank select and then the voice number you can access all of the ROM sounds, the DX200 presets and the 128 user voices.

The AN200 allows the same thing, but the map is much, much simpler.

Yes, I said I tried this with MSBs and LSBs from PLG150-DX manual, doesn't work. It only works when changing between DX200's two factory pattern and one user pattern banks.

So the lesson: put a PLG150-DX into hypothetical something which supports only 20 patches, and you will get only 20 out of 912...

DX200 supports VCED & ACED parameters, merge all PLG voices into a single library...

The PLG Editor (DX Edit?) should be able to see all the presets. The DX200 editor cannot.
