Dimensions?

Body dimension: 16mm (W) x 17.5mm (L), maybe?
Shaft diameter: 6mm, maybe?
Shaft height: ?
Total height: ?

As far as newly minted stuff easily available through Mouser goes, I'm thinking ALPS EC16B2410408 is close to correct, but need more information. Also looking at Alpha RE160F-40E3-20A-24P-003 (Mouser #318-ENC160F-24P), depending on shaft height.

Shaft height is probably the total height subtract 6.5mm, so if you measure 26.5mm from PCB to top of encoder then it's probably 20mm. If so, then the Alpha above could be correct.

If it's 31.5mm from PCB to top of encoder then probably 25mm shaft, so the ALPS above could be correct.

If the shaft height is 20mm, this ALPS model may work (don't know what part number this is though!): https://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-2-ALPS-Rot ... SwCoBakuqi

If it's even shorter than that (21.5mm total height), I'm thinking Bourns PEC16-4215F-N0024 might work.

Wow, I didn't expect that - thanks for your help again.
Here it is in all its skipping glory:

It's Alps 331A. Here are my measurements (unfortunately I don't have callipers, so there may be 0,5 mm uncertainity, but I hope encoders are standarized):
Diameter of base: 16 mm
Total height: 28,5 mm
Shaft height (including screw thread): 21,5 mm
Base height: 7 mm
Shaft diameter: 6 mm
Here is how it looks from inside (with main PCB in place)

An update - I bought encoder (it was actually harder than I thought - most of them didn't have screw thread) and fitted it inside. I have ordered Alps encoder also, but I needed new one badly (for rehersal - the old one deteriorated quickly, it was last call actually), so I bought this Chinese noname. I plan to mount Alps in the end.
As you can see, new encoder is differently oriented (45 degrees turn) and have ACB terminals (original had ABC). It's rather large (I had to bend the connectors), but everything works fine.

If/when you successfully get the Alps in there, please come back and do tell what the exact part number is and any special considerations, just as you've done here.

There you go:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GX6287iJ3MMPOCMvFwJV-xYs5U9QJg7k/view

This is a dump of the U3 chip (NEC D27C512D-15). Not sure what firmware version this is but the label over the crystal reads:

KAWAI
P130C
E5DP

I should point out that I don't have a spare 27C512D here to run the dump to for checking, so you should probably treat this as "at your own risk" if you decide to use it. The unit it comes from is fine and working properly and no errors were thrown up during dumping.

Hope it's useful.

Good thread.

I´ll make a reading on mine and compare checksums tomorrow.

Any research done yet regarding Q-80 vs Q-80EX?
