Xanadu movie (yeah, the 1980's with Olivia Newton-John)

I just watch this musical recently, and I was surprised it never popped up here before. The only Xanadu I could find were all related to Rush... ;)

Anyway, it's pretty cheezy, unless you like Olivia Newton-John and roller-skates. BUT, there's a segment with the band The Tubes that ports a nice synth set up! There's a Wasp (which gets quite a showdown!), a Oberheim 4 Voices, and an Arp 2600 in a modular set up (with an additional SEM)...

I never cared much for the movie but I always liked the soundtrack. Great ELO songs and ONJ at her peak. I still have the vinyl and there's a great shot of the Arp2600 in the ineer sleeve pictures...The girls aren't bad looking either :)

That was my first viewing, and most likely last... But I grew up with the ONJ Greatest Hits vol. 2 in my parents' discs collection, so I still like some of these tunes. It has no relation whatsoever with my synth love.

Those must be the same synths used in the movie soundtrack, right?

For pure movie greatness, it's hard to top 1979's Skatetown U.S.A. When you take Roller Disco and add Patrick Swayze, Scott Baio, Ron "Horshack" Palillo, and Maureen "Marcia Brady" McCormick, how can you not have anything but a winning combination.

I saw The Tubes live at Southampton Gaumont (TV is King Tour - 1981?), Michael Cotton got a bit carried away, and his entire synth cabinet collapsed. He spent the rest of the gig sat down twiddling his thumbs.

No, those synths belong to The Tubes. ELO did half the soundtrack and Jeff Lynne is a noted Yamaha CS80 user. The other half of the soundtrack is ONJ and her production team (except "I'm Alive" which is ELO with ONJ). Not sure what synths ONJ's team use.

John Farrar, the producer of the ONJ songs, was into the Oberheim OB-X at the time and I guess it saw use on this production too. Richard Tandy of ELO was also
using an OB-X along with a CS-80 and a SLM concert spectrum (a rebadged Welson symphony).
