Emu Vintage Keys - SysEx

Postby JamieOxford » Thu Jun 21, 2018 12:01 am

I've just picked up a Kenton Control Freak and would like to use it to control various parameters on an Emu Vintage Keys.
I've been struggling to get it to do much other than pan - and the manual for the VK seems to suggest only 4 CCs can be used at any one time. However using Sound Quest's Midi Quest it is apparently possible to change all parameters in real time.

Am I missing something?

The VKeys is getting midi from the control freak, it just doesn't seem to be doing anything with it! Do I need to sell it and get a Vintage Pro to get full CC control?

Thanks

Re: Emu Vintage Keys - continuous controllers?

I have something similar from Emu called LaunchPad, it has a "learn" feature and if that's not good enough I'm sure I can program CC numbers in from the front panel, just read up on the manual. I'm sure the Vintage Keys will have a few CCs available, time to read those manuals! :geek:

MIDIQuest is controlling System Exclusive parameters, these are not the same thing as MIDI Continuous Controllers. Check the MIDI spec in the VK manual. Check that the Kenton can send Sys Ex, but it will be more difficult to set up than CCs.

Four CCs is usually enough, can you assign CCs per patch, or is it global?

I've finally got round to some SysEx programming of the Kenton CF to control the Vintage Keys.
Using SoundDiver and the in built midi-monitor is very handy for learning SysEx!

One thing I'm struggling with is fully controlling the filter cutoff using a slider (fader).
Most parameters have a maximum value of 127 and use a string like:
18 0A 00 03 1B 00 'SlideData' 00 - for primary instrument volume

But the filter cutoff has a max value of 255, so the last number expects to be 00 or 01 depending on whether the slider is higher or lower than 127.

18 0A 00 03 03 01 'SlideData' '00/01' - filter cutoff

Does anyone have a solution for programming the final number as variable 00/01 ?
As in:

18 0A 00 03 03 01 00 00 - slider at 0
18 0A 00 03 03 01 7F 00 - slider at 127
18 0A 00 03 03 01 00 01 - slider at 128
18 0A 00 03 03 01 7F 01 - slider at 255

I can program the above across 2 sliders, but obviously it would be preferable to have it on just the one!
I've tried checksum also, but this doesn't help!

All I know is 7 bit is 128 possible values (0 to 127) 8 bit is 256 possible values (0 to 255). That's 2 to the power of whatever the bit depth is. Does that help? Are you using one of these editors for the Kenton:

Thanks for the info.

Yes, I'm using the Windows one - I'll have to play around, see if I can make it work with what you've suggested!
