Jarre lead sound from Oxygene 8

Postby 9ichnails » Wed Nov 14, 2018 1:55 pm

Hello

I wonder how Jarre made this sound. When I listen to it I hear different echo ratio witch all notes. For example in the beginning is faster, and slower on the end of phrase. How is it done?

The echoes all sound in sync with tempo to me. But if you want to vary the delay time with pitch, get a delay pedal with control voltage input and feed the CV out from the keyboard to the delay.

I did something similar with the Moog MF-108M Chorus/Flanger by letting the MIDI note control the LFO speed:

I think this lead is monophonic because delay is only on the last note (no polyphony ?)

And here:

1:05 You can hear lower echo ratio...

And sometimes feedback is longer , sometimes shorter.

Almost all covers and replicas of this piece on YT have poor lead quality, polyphonic lead with the same echo rating synchronized with tempo.

It's a regular tempo synched delay. There is echo on every single note, but because it is tempo synched the notes within a phrase don't sound like they have echo on them because he mostly plays the rhythm in time with the echoes. The trick is getting the repeats to have a timbre that doesn't draw attention to itself. Jarre is probably using a pair of Revox B77, so the repeats will be duller as well as having a nice bit of tape distortion. You can get the same, identical, effect with Sound Toys Echo Boy. I can't remember the echo plugin Jarre is using these days, but IIRC he says in one interview that it has replaced the Revox rack for most things.

I think it's not really echo effect, something like i this cover:

It's like 1 echo feedback direct from synthesizer

btw its most realistic cover of O8 on YT, most of cover makers use normal ping pong echo synchronized witch BMP..its not properly way :) It is magic of Jarre music design, little swing in music :)
