Ensoniq ESQ-1 as MIDI controller

Postby tubesurfer6 » Thu Jan 10, 2019 11:06 am

I'm sure most of you are familiar with the ESQ-1. Would it make a good MIDI controller?

I've played it before and liked it, the keys feel great. I just wasn't into MIDI back then.

Basically, I need a controller for my 'home studio' for running various VSTs (Rhodes, Tron, etc)

Thanks!

Define "good"...

It will work, but it will not let you directly control VST parameters. It can play instruments and send the following control messages:

Pitch Bend
Mod Wheel
Pan CC#10 (from mix page)
Program change (0-127, from mix page)

With the CVP-1 foot pedal attached it can also send either Foot Pedal CC#4 or Volume CC#7 (selectable)

It can also be set up to switch control between up to 8 instruments on 8 different MIDI channels, selected from the mix page.
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

Thanks for the reply. Great, I just need it to be able to play the notes and the pitch/mod wheel.
