Kawai K5000s - access to LCD display

Post by Tekhed66 » Wed Jul 22, 2020 12:04 am

Hi all

I originally tagged this comment to the back of an exiting post but I think it might have been buried at the end so I thought I'd start a new post... moderators can shift this post if they see fit... all good  .

I'm thinking of replacing the screen on my K5k as it's quite dim and blotchy in places. I opened up the case (only removed the back panel) and had a bit of a look to see how to get access to the display.

My question is if there is a specific way to get access to the screen? Can you get to it from the back of the synth by unscrewing everything that sits on top or do you need to remove the knobs and sliders and remove the top panel? I've looked through the service manual (no help) and there aren't any sites or videos that I've found on servicing the keyboard.

Also - is the clear plastic screen attached/glued to the display?... I recently changed the screen on my JD990 and had to cut the plastic screen away from the old display mounting.

Any info/tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated before I get stuck into it with a hammer and chisel ;)

Many thanks.

Definitely not glued. It's been 6 years since that operation, so I don't remember exactly. But wasn't that hard. I don't remember having to remove a lot.
There were no mechanical problems. Just make sure that you don't have any shorts in the display lines because shorting 5v to ground immediately kills the PSU! (THAT was my problem...)

Hi

Thanks for your reply... I thought that this question was going to die on the vine.
Sounds like you went in from the back... seems the sensible way.... I just wanted to ask first as I heard that the K5k is a bit of a fragile beast and I've read heaps of posts regarding accidentally shorting the display and bricking the synth... OUCH!

cheers
