Roland Strings RS-202 Synth - some keys louder than others

Post by bmansell » Sat Sep 05, 2020 5:54 am

Hi all,
wondering if someone might be kind enough to offer some advice for fixing a mid 1970's Roland Strings RS-202 Synth. Four of the keys have a much lower volume than the rest when pressed. I've had it in pieces but can't see anything obvious (which doesn't say a lot as I'm a complete novice on vintage electronics...) I was hoping it might be a dirty contact or similar, but would like some advice on where to start, or whether this sort of thing is common with vintage gear like this...
Any help or advice greatly appreciated.
cheers
Brett (NZ)

Hi Brett,

do these four keys grow quieter with every octave down? In that case you might want to check the dividers -- had something similiar with a Korg PE 2000 some years ago, and it turned out to be the divider ICs.

Hi Stephen,
Thanks very much for your reply. No it doesn't really seem to grow quiter every octive down, I've had a good friend who has good electronics knowledge have a look at it. He's flagged a few capacitors to check, so I'll have a look at those shortly... this is all way out of my league unfortunately so I don't like my chances...
Cheers
Brett
