How much gear did you have in high school?

Post by GeneralBigbag » Mon Jun 05, 2006 7:59 am

I have been totally amazed by the amount of gear that some kids on this board have and I wanted to get some idea of where people were at when they were leaving high school.

When I was 17 I had a Tele, and a Zoom 505 fx pedal. It took me until the summer after first year to build up enough $$ to buy a MC307 (they were $2200 new in New Zealand, completely unavailable used) after borrowing my friend's 505 ($3500 new in NZ) for a time.

The only thing i had when i was a teen was a midi controller keyboard, Evolution MK-149. I used it on a PC with my soundblaster 2.0 sound card, and later AWE32, for both FM and sample playback, and to some degree with early softsynths.

And of course i used trackers a lot. First octamed and noisetracker on amiga, and later on PC whacker tracker and later still fast tracker 2. Not really synthesis although i was always keen on that tight sample and sequencer integration.

To be honest though, had i known of the second hand market, and known what was available i would have gotten real synthesizers much sooner. Some very good synths sell for almost nothing.

edit: spelling mistakes etc

When I was 16/17 , the only gear I had was a second-hand Marlin 'Sidewinder' Precision bass copy and a 10w Sound City guitar combo. I saved for them with my weekend job as a pub-glass collector in my uncle's pub (earning a staggering tenner a night - a lot of money to me in 1989!)
I didn't get where I am today by posting on internet forums.

I graduated from high school about 3 years ago and at that time I had a Martin D-35 acoustic, an Alvarez classical guitar, a Gibson Les Paul Studio (Gem Series w/ P-90 Pickups), a modded Squier Fat Strat, and a Line 6 Flextone II XL. In terms of keys I had a Hamilton baby grand and a Yamaha PSR-230 or something from 6th grade, but didn't really play it, nor did I play synth until about a year ago when I got my Micron.

Since I have picked up a Pearl drum set, my Nord Rack, JP-8000, MicroKORG, Apple PowerBook, Logic Pro 7, Firebox, SM57, Squier Jazz Bass, Fender Strat, Marshall 1960A 4x12 Cabinet, Peavey bass amp, Roland guitar amp (pretty neat little thing, it's actually a small combo with 4x5-inch speakers), upright piano, electric organ (just bought from Goodwill two days ago for $40!) and a bunch of other junk.

In high school, I had a Yamaha DX7, a Casio CZ-101, a Casio RZ-1 sampling drum machine (the ghetto SP-12 :)), an Alesis Midiverb II and a Korg SQD-1 sequencer.

I'm in my 30s now. When I see kids get into gear, I start to laugh, but then I realize that I was one of them.

I think the main difference between when most of the older guys on this board were teens and now, is the price of gear, and wages. Teens wind up getting more money than they used to, and there's plenty of cost-effective things to spend it on.

When I was 13 I had a Juno-60, a Solina String ensemble and a DR-110. When I left highschool I had the JW-50 if I remember correctly.

I got the Juno and the Solina back and the DR-110 can be done by my MPC :).

Same here. I can't even afford a decent sampler or drum machine though.
